My Experience in skirts

Post by TomH »

I've been wearing denim skirts all over Arizona USA for the last 8 months. I've only wore my shorts two times since February. This is really comfortable! As the weather has gotten warmer, it's even more comfortable. I don't believe that denim is invisible, as some have said, but certainly people don't care. It's true that some don't notice, but quite a few have noticed. You can see them look as they approach and then act like they didn't see anything. I do wonder what they think. I have also noted it's mostly females that notice. Fashion training?

No one has said anything when I'm in denim, but one older lady asked if I play the bag pipes when I was out in a red pleated skirt once. I told her I don't have that much talent and she said the same about herself. I've also wore a black pencil skirt a couple times that everyone ignored. All of my 'going out' skirts are just less than knee high, except for my tan hiking skirt that's a mini. Nothing has been said about it from the car to the trail or on the trails. In the cold of the morning or evening at home, I have two different color long skirts that are almost ankle length. Much warmer than I thought they could be.

My wife and I have looked in thrift shops for years to find the good stuff we need... Over the years I have found my shorts and shirts and now I look for skirts, too. Sometimes nothing, but some are great finds. Many brand new. About half need hemming to suit me, but that's not a great problem. My Mom started me on a treadle Singer.

MIS has been a great help to me. I've never had the nerve to appear that different, especially to my friends. Not fully true I guess. I've always been known as the guy who never wears long pants, just shorts, even in winter. Maybe skirts are not such a great leap. So far, none have had a problem, but it does take more nerve for me.

I want to thank Bob for all his work keeping this forum alive and advancing.

Tom, since you are already the guy who wears shorts all year your friends might not even notice the change to skirts. Maybe that is too hopeful but it does sound like they are good people who won't razz you for it. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Quiet Mouse, you are an extraordinary person and have been a great addition to this forum. I wrote about my experience to encourage those guys that are having trouble getting the nerve to try skirts out and about in public.

Something new to add. Just a few days ago, I did finally get stopped by a young lady. As she approached me, she smiled and said, "I like your skirt. You look great in it." I thanked her and then she asked why I had choosen to wear it today. I gave the stock answer that it's comfortable and she agreed. She then stuck out her hand and told me her name was Cindy. I introduced myself while shaking her hand and then we both went on our way. For the rest of the afternoon, I couldn't seem to wipe the grin off my face.

Tom,

It's experiences like these that act as a defence against 10 less good ones. What a wonderful validation of your clothes-wearing!

A very nice story indeed. An experience such as yours is just what the fencesitters need to read to give them the courage to venture out and have experiences of their own. Many thanks for sharing!
