Yes, I finally did it. A denim kilt/skirt (it has a sort of front panel, and sort of has pleats!) which feels WAY shorter than what I'm used to.
I've got it on at the moment, with brown tshirt and brown tights (I'd feel REALLY exposed without the tights). It feels...almost as if you're not wearing anything, but then you get a brush of material on your thigh and your panicked brain calms down again. The edge is frayed, and it looks funky. My first skirt purchase in...oh, 7 years. It's good to be back!

I suspect that's a common first perception -- I certainly know that's how I felt when I first borrowed my wife's mini-kilt (which I still haven't worked up the cubes to actually wear in public (our yard is OK)). It's a 14-incher, and made of fairly light fabric, so ,yes, it's like it's not there, and leads to me occasionally checking to see if it is. Interestingly, I never got the same sensation from the short wrap-skirts I made; they're close enough to the legs that you always know they're there.
My wife busts my chops about it saying that I look better in the mini-kilt than she does. She's wrong, of course, she looks vastly better in it than I do -- I merely look "different".

Alright - I'm a bit biased - as I wear quite short skirts. The shortest I have is 12 inches - which is too short for comfort really, so I only wear that with thick leggings and that looks OK then. Most of my skirts are 13 to 15 inches. You wouldn't believe it, but that extra inch or so makes a BIG difference!
It's true that short skirts are a bit drafty - but that's part of the fun. As long as they are a heavy material like denim, you can be confident that it won't blow up. Although, like you, I sometimes have to check if the skirt is still there - as it is easy to feel quite exposed - but that is usually just nerves.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood . . .
QM - I never really took a break; it was more down to the fact that in my early skirt-wearing days (1998 - 2000), I bought quite a few skirts of differing sizes. Then I stopped buying them (but still wore them, though). This was down to two things; firstly, I had about 15 skirts of varying shapes and styles (usually non-"feminine" colours - i.e. greys, black, navy) and secondly, my wife, knowing this, disapproved hugely with further acquisitions.
So I stopped. But now I've started up again - not going mad, but filling in the gaps as it were.
I do have two skirts already which are shorter than 20 inches (18 and 16 respectively); these are both stretch material (including waist) and look best with opaque hosiery (although I prefer sheer hosiery myself). The new one must be...about 13/14 inches!
I have only worn a skirt in public once (I dont include kilts here - I've worn them so often I can't remember all the times) - it was an H&M mens long skirt. That was fun, but very scary! It was back in 2000 if I remember..
Glad to hear that there are more men wearing short skirts. In my opinion it's a great look when worn with a nice top and jacket. And for me of course, pantyhose and heels as well.
