Hunch

Post by Stu »

I've been on the lookout for a plain, knee-length blue denim skirt for some time. I bought my last one about three years ago from Marks and Spencer where it was in a sale, knocked down from £19.99 to just £10. Since then, the standard style has become harder to find as women seem to prefer either a maxi-length or mini. I have seen a similar one to the last one I bought at Marks and Spencer online under their "White Stuff" label at £55. I'm not paying that.

Yesterday, I had occasion to call at a primary school in a neighbouring village and I took the opportunity to call into a small supermarket just across the road. Before doing so, I saw the Barnardo's charity shop next door was open. I don't use charity shops, except maybe to give them stuff I no longer need, but I never buy from them. However, something in my head told me to go in because I might just find the denim skirt I wanted. My rational mind told me the chances of that happening would be extremely remote and I was wasting time but, nevertheless, I followed my hunch and walked it. My eyes quickly descended on a rail with about half a dozen items which said: "Everything £1. No returns". And there, among the items, was the skirt I had been looking for. It was the right style, colour, length and size - and it even had the original label on it suggesting it was unworn. Unbelievable - but 100% true. Never dismiss a hunch.

I think I might buy a lottery ticket this weekend and see if my luck holds!

I have found some great buys at thrift stores/charity shops, what have you. Yes, and some of it new. A thing I have come to miss here on Madeira.

I have about thirty skirts, almost all of them from thrift shops. When I get tired of one I just donate it back.

I've shopped and touted charity shops; Goodwill and consignment shop for a long while -- it would have been my first thought for a denim skirt --so often there is a bunch of them. Let go of your pride/snob sense and think 'recycle', savings for you and the planet, and an easy way to fill a closet and help some folks in need of the training/jobs they can use.

I consider eBay too be the internet thrift store, so to speak. But that's another thread...
