Pockets

Post by skirted84 »

How important do MIS find the existence of pockets in skirts and dresses? They are automatically present in mens trousers (and probably lots of female trousers too though possibly shallower). Its not a dealbreaker exactly but I do look for pockets when browsing my potential additions. When I was in the transgender phase this was one of the more negative realities of female clothing I experienced, and the need for some sort of bag at all times. This came up in discussion at the weekend with a female friend of one of our MIS assembled. And yes I was wearing a dress with reasonable pockets in the side seams.

Pockets are handy but i can manage without. My coat has pockets and i carry a canvas bag.
No pockets means that your clothes hang better which is a positive.

Pockets are important, but if does not have to be on the dress/skirt, if it's something I will be wearing with a coat, jacket or jumper that can have the pockets too. But I don't leave I home without pockets often. I can only think of once, and that was testing a mock-up dress in the woods close to home, and I did end up carrying a tiny rucksack instead. Probably happened more times, especially if was only going out in the car to pick someone up, but then I can put my things in the car.

So dresses/skirts that lack pockets are more limited in what I can pair them with, especially once it gets warmer outside.

When I first started skirting, I was convinced that any skirt I purchased or made, would have proper pockets, since I was a man and men need pockets. However in response to some members here, I started last year (2024) with a single blue handbag, I had requested for Christmas. My aim was to see if I could make myself comfortable with using a handbag. By the end of the year, I had three handbags and had become a total convert to handbag use. This has freed me up to buy skirts with zero pockets and be perfectly happy with all my stuff in a handbag. One thing to note, is that other stuff such as headache tablets etc. have found a home in my handbags, where they would never be carried in my pockets, on the off chance of needing them.

I still retain the use of skirts with pockets for my working life, since I have the bags with computers and tools to lug around, so a handbag would be something else to manage on site. The Roman denim skirt, has usable pockets as do the SkirtCraft shirts and my utility kilts.

From the beginning, I had no use for pockets on skirts or dresses, and just because their small size made them almost useless. I started out using Buxton bags, but graduated to women’s handbags and purses and never looked back. My one argument against putting stuff in pockets is that it kills the smooth silhouette, what with those bulges, something I absolutely refused to deal with.

I don't use the pockets on pants anymore. And therefore don't miss them on skirts or dresses. Do l do like pockets on jackets and coats if they are big enough to fit caps gloves and scarfs into. I find it so much easier to just carry all my stuff in a bag a purse or whatever you want to call it.

I try to only buy skirts with pockets even if they are quite shallow as the one thing I always need on my person is a handkerchief so the size of the pockets doesn't matter too much. I recently bought a skirt online that looked as if it had pockets however they turned out to be dummy openings so I was quite disappointed with that one.
No doubt almost everyone here has tried to stuff just about everything into their trouser pockets at some point however these days we have to carry far too much stuff that the pockets are so full that they make the trousers even more uncomfortable than they need be. The last couple of years I have even found myself carrying a coat in the summer for no other reason than to fill the pockets so I have finally given in thanks to others leading the way and purchased a bag which looks a bit like a small army haversack which avoids a lot of the uneducated questions as i'm using it all of the time. So far the only comments I've got have been extremely positive and my wife even thinks it looks trendy.

Most of my skirts have pockets, some being surprisingly good ones, but I can do without.
Most of the time I use pockets for keys and a shoulder bag or small back pack for everything else; wallet, change purse, phone, drink bottle, tape measure, pencil, reading glasses.

If there's no pockets, I don't buy/wear it. My criteria for clothing includes being comfortable and functional just as much as how it looks.

I used to buy kilts from USAKilts.com but they are not available with pockets. Then I discovered SportKilt.com and can add optional pockets. My last three purchases were from them. Of course, I also have a few utility kilts (all with pockets) from other vendors. But, yeah, I am one who does appreciate pockets. I do not load them with anything other than my phone in a wallet case (left pocket) and a car key (right pocket).

I started skirting in kilts so of course no pockets. Spring and fall I wear a blue jean jacket so lots of good sized pockets. I have two. One with sleeves and one without sleeves. I have two purses for summer. A blue jean one with multiple divided areas and a hand stitched leather one. Now that I have started to make my own skirts and kilts I put hand sized pockets in all of them. I don't carry anything in them. They are just a place to stick my hands.

Utkilts in Seattle? offer a 'utility kilt' in what they call 'business edition' which has pockets inserted into the edges of the front aprons, They are available in plain colour or the 'popular' tartans. They work surprisingly well for the usual collection of keys and small coinage that we all need to carry somewhere. My phone, spectacles and pens normally live in the chest pockets of my shirt, but could be added to the kilt pockets without too much trouble.

I mostly sought pockets early on; but there were so many nifty skirts that appealed that did not have pockets -- so I bought them and tried all the various alternatives discussed on numerous threads herein, and I still used some of those 'hacks', but with encouragement from my spouse and the men on this site, I added a purse to the mix; and purses eventually gave me almost total freedom and better options even than always having pockets.

My take: Do not limit your options and pleasure by insisting upon any singular attribute to your clothing -- there are comfortable, functional, and delightful clothes and accessories that will combine well to meet your needs for more overall fun and pleasure.

My Stumptown kilt has a big pocket in the front apron which is accessible from both sides of the apron. I believe it is a standard feature to their kilts.

I also love the colours of this kilt and your outfit in general, but that kilt really pops!
