Hello from Galicia, NW Spain

Post by JohnnyH »

Hello!

My name's John, 67 years old, I was born in the UK but have been living in the seaside town of A Coruña, Spain for about 38 years now. I've always enjoyed wearing skirts, I always take the chance whenever I'm at fancy dress parties or smiliar to wear one (I've got a great Roman soldier costume for example), but really only started using them as a day-to-day wear option in the last couple of years. Even now, I still don't always feel very confident. You very, very rarely see any men wearing skirts around this part of the world, so I do feel I stand out quite a lot. But I love the look and the comfort. My female friends are almost all very supportive, which helps a lot, whereas some male friends are simply "tolerant".

Thanks for having me, I hope to contribute and learn while I'm here.

Hi John, from Castilla y Leon to the east of you! (And also Norfolk... I bounce between the two places!)

Good to see you here and I echo your sentiments. No, there's not much skirt wearing to be seen in provincial Spain, even amongst women! However, I do feel that the Spanish are generally more tolerant (live and let live) ...and also more gossipy.

I get asked sometimes if my skirt is Scottish (it''s not, but there's no word for kilt in Spanish) and sometimes it's easier just to say yes, which always gets an understanding nod. For all they know I've got Scottish roots

Hola John,

I don't think any of us live in places where there is much skirt wearing by men -- in that you are not alone; yet many of us have readily come to terms with being out in a skirt pretty much any time and place.

And, many of us have reported the question: "Is that a kilt" as it is apparently an easier conversation opener than asking if you are wearing a skirt which might imply 'weirdness' vs the ok macho of a kilt. I typically have answered; "No, solo una falda" and find it often leads to a more insightful conversation than granting the misnomer of a 'kilt'.

I also suspect many who ask if you are wearing a kilt, are trying to be receptive but don't wish to offend, and they know dang well it is NOT a kilt -- thus only the nod and departure, as you have only confirmed you are not worth their time as you can't be forthright. Acknowledgement is part of confidence and the demeanor you need to go forth comfortably.

Nice to meet a fellow resident in Spain. The kilt thing is a good one, I've got a skirt with a tartan pattern and that makes people just suppose I'm Scottish. And yes, people are tolerant here, mostly, I have had some very dirty looks sometimes, but I just let it go.

Hola John,
Welcome to the cafe.
I spent two weeks in La Palma just before Christmas and wore a skirt the whole time. Although it is the Canary Islands rather than mainland Spain I had no adverse comments either in restaurants or simply when walking about. Most people probably didn’t even notice, so go for it and enjoy wearing your skirts out full time.

That's great to hear. People in the Canary Islands are always so nice.

Hello JohnnyH, a belated welcome to you!

Galicia is a beautiful part of the world, and one where I blazed the skirted trail for you in 2018 on a holiday in Bilbao and Santiago dl C, including a wee side trip to A Coruña. Nice old town, but I didn't see any Roman centurions knocking about!
Keep on skirting,

Alastair
