Black corset mini dress

Discussion of fashion elements and looks that are traditionally considered somewhat "femme" but are presented in a masculine context. This is NOT about transvestism or crossdressing.

Black corset mini dress

Post by DrFishnets »

I was in my local Primark and seen a black corset mini dress which I found very attractive. I just had to buy it and they had my size 20 in stock. Anyway, I took it home and tried it on but even though it’s my size it’s quite tight and I’m not able to zip it up at the back. Anyway, I’ve decided to keep it as an incentive for losing more weight. The corset mini dress looks like a pinafore dress or gymslips that the older St Trinians sixth form student girls used to wear in the old classic St Trinians films. I really like the pleated skirt part of the dress. I’m going to wear this over a black or purple top with black leggings and doc martens boots and maybe a trench coat too.

Yes iI like the flare of the lower part but dont like that neckline. For ages I have been looking for a tunic or pinafore dress with plenty of flare ............ Very rare.

Yeah the neckline does look a bit odd but is easily fixed by wearing a black top or blouse/shirt under or over the corset dress. It’s the pleated flare of the skirt part that is making me keep this dress other than that I would of taken it back to the shop as the top part doesn’t zip at the back due to my big belly even though the skirt part fits me.

These kinds of things aren't hard to make - If you develop a fitted bodice block, see:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUtyPPn ... bT&index=2)

Then it isn't hard to put any kind of skirt you want on it. The one shown in the op is either a gathered rectangle or gathered partial circle skirt.

Note that the dress shown in the op will not hang the same on a male figure because it is relying on the girl's hips to flare the skirt. To get that kind of flare you'd either need a larger volume of fabric or a stiffer fabric - see my other post regarding silhouettes.

You're right to mention the hips as a key element for flare. On a masculine silhouette, a structuring undergarment or small crinoline could help recreate this effect, or a textile scenography that plays on volumes (I'm thinking of those creations we sometimes see in art installations or immersive events). If it inspires you, there are some interesting ideas for integrating these kinds of concepts into design or staging projects over here.

I have a number of petticoats of different lengths and colours. You are right that the petticoat changes the skirt's profile and gives the effect you are looking for.

Some skirts with a lot of light material give plenty of flare by themselves.

I like the dress too, but I am not sure I could get it to work in my style. Maybe something to work on next year.
