Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
Teachers at the Ryde Academy on the Isle of Wight had 70 females students line up to have their skirts measured. Those who failed to have along enough skirts sent home. These skirts are made one fit all regardless of body type. Girls with long legs was ridicule.

Re: Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
I've never understood the point of compulsory school uniforms. My school in Australia had a uniform, but it was not compulsory. Here in NL there are basically no school uniforms. I think some private schools might.
I'll be honest, I always wore the damn thing because then I didn't have to worry about what to wear. But that was a choice.

Forcing students to wear school uniforms is not really condusive to helping them to learn or to be prepared for the real world. And then on top of all that forcing them to be embarrassed by being stood up in front of the class and have some Arsewipe come along with a tape to see just how long the skirt is, is just undignified.
The people doing this should be sent packing. Fired from the positions of authority they have.
Just my $.02 worth.

Mr S, sorry but you are wrong about the "one size" and there was no direct measuring.
The local press merely said that the school requires the skirt to be pleated and knee length, nothing unusual really.
On that basis, it's most unlikely that the girls had no choice but to go mini length.
The measure was a visual judgement, knee length or not, easy question to answer.
These girls were not "degraded", they were sanctioned for failing to meet the uniform standard, which they'd have been perfectly aware of in advance.
I'd also add that this has nothing to do with school uniform in general, nor the bias against boys who'd prefer to wear skirts in class either.

Is it more degrading to have the length of your skirt measured or more degrading to be ridiculed for wanting to wear a skirt?
Re: Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
I agree that school uniforms are unnecessary, but they really do prep you for the real world. You'll be under dumb restrictions on what you can wear in a lot of jobs, even ones without a written dress code. Kids don't need to practice that, five days a week for twelve or more years, however. And learning to navigate the unwritten rules of what is appropriate attire for what type of situation would be far better.Fred in Skirts wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2024 6:11 pm Forcing students to wear school uniforms is not really conducive to helping them to learn or to be prepared for the real world.
As to whether it is conducive to learning, the jury is still out, but I know I can't learn much of anything if I'm passing out from the heat...

Re: Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
In my part of the world schools both public and private have mandatory uniforms. Private schools seem to have a more traditional (somewhat out of date) uniform and threat of expulsion has greater meaning. Public schools tend to have a more relaxed uniform and have less ability to enforce compliance as education must be provided to all.
I remember my days at school with long trousers, tie, jumper, blazer and felt hat. Except for a hat providing protection against skin cancer, it was totally inappropriate for the environment and irrelevant to my post schooling life.

Final note,
The school uniform policy is all nicely gender neutral and politically correct, trousers are a real alternative for these "offended" young ladies.
Funnily enough, there are no reports of a boy's skirt breaking the rules, I wonder why?
Mountain out of a pimple, never mind a molehill.
Steve.

Re: Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
My first contact with uniform policy was aged 5 first going to school. My school uniform included a cap, which my mother thought cute and had therefore bought and insisted I wear. I get to school first day and discover I am the only idiot in a cap. Of course the game immediately became to knock the cap of my head, or steal it and run off with it, then play piggy in the middle with me the piggy trying to get my cap back…..Going home without it of course would get me into more trouble. So my first thoughts about uniform were not good.

Re: Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
Did you feel degraded or insulted by it.
My real memory of school uniform is envy that the girls were allowed things that I was not.
I saw the perfect answer today to "Girl, that skirt is too short"!
She'd ditched the skirt in favour of a very skimpy pair of shorts, probably no bigger than underwear was in my day.
That could really give the hemline police apoplexy.
Steve.
Re: Degrading secondary school girls- measuring skirts
The thing I remember of those early days was fear and just trying to get through this school experience.
In the early days I wasn't concerned about boys/girls clothes and skirts, I was just concerned with not getting the uniform dirty and making sure I brought every bit of it home. Things really changed when leotards were introduced for girls at PE (physical Education). My first thought was, they look good, why don't I get one? I think that started my brain analysing what I got to wear versus what girls got to wear such as pretty dresses. This has continued to this very day.
