It's what happens, it seems, when a lot of people spend most of their lives in a fantasy bubble maintained by right-wing tabloid newspapers and near-fascist social media. A lot of British people voted for Brexit because they don't like foreigners, and then discovered that this merely switched the balance of incomers from the EU to the former British Empire (Africa and southern Asia). So yes, they did their own research, and discovered that most algorithms will happily push you towards more and more extreme racism, conspiracy theories, and mindless violence.
