To Duolingo's credit, it seems to be very supportive of MIS. Bob, George and Seth all have them!

When I went to school, it was less than half of a year group who were found worthy, being taught a foreign language. For the rest it was enough if they could read and write Danish, put two and two together, and learn to trust in God.

Around ten years after I started in school it changed. It became more and more obvious that all people living in a country with a population half the inhabitants of New York City must be able to somehow communicate in another language.
Since then, English has been obligatory. Further, there is a choice of German and French, in some schools also Spanish.

I have learned English (8 years), German (7 years), French (4 years), and Latin (4 years). And I understand Swedish and Norwegian. My preferred foreign language is German.
I'm fascinated by the rather complicated German grammar with all its logic, mixed up with its overwhelming many exceptions. I still like studying Duden, the 'official' German grammar. Mine has over 1.300 pages.
