Red or Brown?

Post by Midas »

An appropriate question in a caff.

Are you a tomato ketchup or brown sauce man?

Brown sauce (HP) is my preference.

Not quite sure that if fits into either category, but Dave's Insanity Sauce is worth a try. It packs a punch and commands respect.

Tomato if it is a pie and brown if it is a sausage. No sauce if it is good food.

Houses of Parliament Sauce. Or HP Sauce. colloquially known as Brown Sauce, originates from the Empire, India and a new taste for spicy food.
See also
Daddies Sauce, Worcester Sauce and Camp Coffee. Oh and a nice bit of Chutney.

Fred, all English versions of the new (back then) tasty sauces would not be tolerated by British tastes. So everything except Worcester Sauce is no more spicy than tomato ketchup.
Nowadays here in England people eat hot spicy food all the time. Me included :)

SALSA -- the new ketchup.
It's not just for Mexican food.
Ubiquitous all over North America. In a hundred different varieties.
I also like original Tabasco -- the red stuff. Especially with eggs.

HP isn’t spicy but fruity, as is Daddies. Worcester Sauce is a thin sauce best used as an ingredient when cooking some dishes, but it isn’t as good as Henderson’s Relish (a Sheffield product probably unavailable in most of the UK).

That's quite recent, and I'd hoped confined to the USA. Not all that long ago, ketchup was made using tomatoes and vinegar. Now it's made using tomatoes and high fructose corn syrup. I can't stand the new stuff, but one cannot escape it here. Nowadays I use Tabasco Sauce instead -- which baffles everybody around me.

Ketchup isn't too difficult to make even in small quantities. In our house we are trying to steer clear of too much sugar. We are all starting to get a bit fat. I only recently fully understood the effect of sugar on our metabolism. Not easy when practically everything is loaded with sugars.

For me its Brown sauce on anything fried (sausages, bacon, gammon etc.), I believe it helps to break down the grease.
Ketchup is usually reserved for Fish but not on the chips.

Neither, ever. There are lots more interesting sauces around, but in general I like the flavour of food as it comes.
