AI Sucks

Post by Stu »

I don't know if anyone uses the free AI systems, but I have found them to be wrong more often than they are correct. I recently asked three different systems which King of England died in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. One said it was King John, another said it was James I and the third got it correct - King Sweyn Forkbeard. Today, I asked FOUR (!) AI systems the shortest straight-line distance from the furthest westerly point in Europe to the furthest eastern point on the North American continent. I received varied answers between 5,000 km and 8,000 km. The answer is 286 kilometres (178 miles).

They also believe myths - like the one about the migrants coming to the UK from the Caribbean on the ship Empire Windrush being invited to come by the UK government. Not only were they not actually invited, but the UK prime minister at the time, Clement Atlee, tried to have the ship diverted to west Africa. I had to show the AI systems a link to the UK documents from the time to prove that.

I never trust them.

Good case of "garbage in - garbage out". There lies the problem. AI learns by scraping the internet. False information becomes the truth as far as AI is concerned. The old saying "tell a lie enough times it becomes fact"

It’s not really all that - it’s a combination of word prediction and how “accurate” you “ask” it to be - the less wiggle room you give it, the less verbose and possibly less informative it will be. Give it too much leeway and it will hallucinate and make up facts. As for math unless you are using a math-specific ai (ie, wolfram product), it will predict what the numbers will be but has no reasoning behind it.

It’s frighteningly good at “writing” code but that too may have errors or only work with specific versions of libraries - I’ve found it useful as a way to generate boilerplate functions that I then modify.

There is a problem with sans-serif fonts, isn't there?

Yes, especially when used in passwords where 1, l and I are all very similar as are 0 and O.

AI has its uses, like driving my vaccum cleaner or mower, or sorting and categorizing things. But information retrieval is not something is going to be good at for a long time, there is just to much false information and it does not seem capable of independent source criticism.

Yes, certain 'letters' appear to be the same in type written comments.
Personally, I add a period ( . ) after each letter, with a space between,
to help differentiate the concept and to avoid potential problems.

Several months ago, a member thought my signature was AI instead of AL.
This member 'thought' I was a 'bot' or Artificial Intelligence.

:hmmm: A 73 year old 'bot' :?:

Over all, I totally agree that A. I. Sucks. The 'intelligence' level, IMHO, is much
lower than a child in kindergarden(5-6 years old). A "Virtual Assistant" on some
websites, and customer service phone contacts, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
If you don't say certain words, in a specific order, you get nowhere - fast.

Just my $.02 worth :D

I lack personal experience with dogs. The estimates I have seen on line are those of a two year old human.

I have a dog, he is a lot smarter than AI and doesn't make things up.

At its best, we have strong Narrow A. I. . This is probably not a good analogy, but I can't think of any other-comparing this level of A. I. to some of our domesticated animals.

We really should tackle AS first. It'll be easier as the bar is lower.

Real live Stupidity lives, breathes, and walks amongst us every day and is common as dirt -- therefore easy to study. Intelligence, on the other hand, is somewhat rare, can be cagey, and reluctant to show itself because it gets beat up on by the overwhelming amount of stupid.
