IMHO, this comes down to the Caveman theory and beliefs.
Men were the hunters and protectors of the family unit.
Women were the nurturer's, supporting men and the family unit.
Basically, women only needed men to procreate offspring.
(Think of a lion in the animal kingdom.)
In many aspects, women are the 'stronger' sex. They bear the
offspring to keep the family unit going on. Using the animal
kingdom example, let a predator try to attack the offspring.
The women(mother) will tear you a new one

This "Caveman" attitude continues today, with the majority of
men keeping it going. They think, because they are 'stronger',
that other(ALL) men must follow this concept.
Men will ridicule others(peer pressure) if 'they' don't follow this ideology.
Men, who think outside of the box, are considered inferior to the human race.
How many 'millennia' will it take to change this attitude(ideology)

Again, this is my opinion - take it for what it's worth
