Bad news & good news

Bad news = Mother-in-law in hospital due stroke.
Still in waiting room for I.C.U.

Good news = my son & his family are safe. The live about
15-20 miles west of Orlando, FL. They did not have the major
rain & wind from Hurricane Matthew that happened on the Atlantic
Coast of Florida.

Will post an update when more is known.

Al, on the bad news: Damn. Here's hoping that it evolves into a workable/better situation.

On the "good", I'm glad your son and family are out of harm's way; I heard from my contacts hard on the Atlantic seaboard and they high-tailed it for the mainland where they are staying with friends. No word yet on how their place fared. When I say, "hard on the Atlantic seaboard" I mean it; this is where Sapphire and I spent a couple of weeks for several winters in the Naughties and it's walking distance to the Atlantic Ocean where the next land to the east is Morocco.

At least I don't have to worry about a blow of that magnitude tomorrow when I have a day-sail scheduled in Boston.

Thanks Carl. The Doctors have determined she had a MAJOR stroke.
Basically, it's on the right half of her brain, thus the left side has been
affected. She has SOME feeling on her left side and lost most of
her speech capabilities. She can barely communicate. Her right side
seems to be somewhat normal. The Cat Scan's, both 'B' and 'A' do not
show a clot in her brain. It could've been somewhere else and traveled
to her brain and has since dissolved. The Echo-grahm did not show any
damage to her heart. The other bad news is that last April, her renal
functions were great. Today, she is in renal failure. She's 84 years old.
She MAY not get released from the hospital.
Hopefully will know more tomorrow.

After spending about 12 hours between the ER and the ICU, my wife
and I feel like we've been put through the washing machine and hung
out to dry in a thunderstorm. We're beat

When walking to Walgreens Drug Store to get Pepsi Products, a guy
hollered across the street from me that he liked my 'outfit'. Denim 29"
skirt, handbag worn like a sporran, plaid shirt, over-the-calf black support
hose and my black shoes. He gave me a big smile along with a

Ouch! Did she get into hospital quickly? They are getting much better at combating and overcoming the effects of stroke these days. Hope she has a good outcome.

My thoughts are with you and your family UA. All you can do is take it one day at a time as it will take perhaps some weeks before the full extent of any facility loss will become apparent. Sometimes recovery is almost full, sometimes not and speed of recovery can be very patchy. Give her all the support that you can and bear up.

UPDATE Mother-in-law is resting. She may be released in a day or so.
She'll go back to the dementia/alzheimer's facility under hospice care.
It could be a few days or a few weeks. No one knows. Sitting in a
hospital I.C.U. waiting room is a pain

I understand the waiting around at hospitals; I've done that a few too many times already in my life.

In any event, I'm glad that things are under control. How's your wife holding up? Be there for her.

My thoughts prayers are with you. It is always a difficult time dealing with these situations. She has to beheading to a better place. For all we know she may be their already. Please give your wife my sympathy and best wishes.

Under these trying circumstances, I haven't been around much.
'Mom' is being released between 3 - 6 PM today. She'll be going
back to the Dementia/Alzheimer facility. Hospice paperwork has
been filled out. My wife is beginning to 'accept' the inevitable.
But I know, when the time comes, she'll be a basket case. Same
thing happened when her Dad passed in 2012. We've already had
a 'bout' with her emotions.

I'll be glad when western philosophy and medicine catch up to the realisation that death does not equal "failure" but is rather the necessary and inevitable result of having lived a life. The important thing when dealing with end-of-life situations is to not become morose over the matter -- especially if the person who is dying has lived a long and good life. Quite the opposite, really. In a way, that person's life should be celebrated for the achievements and successes over that life. This is especially true if the individual has touched other lives and improved them -- in other words, "will be fondly remembered".

Sure, there's going to be grief; that's entirely natural. But there should also be a fond closure to the situation as well; we needn't fight to keep the soon-to-be deceased amongst us but rather bid them a fond and loving farewell for the change about to come. In other words, embrace the inevitable -- for fighting it is painful and futile.

I told my daughter that when I pass on to my reward, I wanted a real send off. Open a bottle of bubbly and throw a party. Of course I will miss it but what the heck I won't care...
