Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
We went to the local NPR station offices last night for a dinner to hear the final Garrison Keillor broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion. I wore a tan stretch nylon outdoor skirt by Merrell, Chaco sandals, and a black tee shirt. My legs look good, having a great tan on them now. I came in second in the PHC trivia contest and won the contest to sing the Powdermilk Biscuits jingle, so I left with a free cap and a free coffee mug. Not bad. Had a long talk with the business manager for the station who was the only one bold enough to ask about my skirt. It was a good outing.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
Last week I drove down to Corfe Castle wearing my Skirtcraft skirt. I walked through the village and went in the National Trust tearoom there, before going to B&B where I was staying. I didn't notice anyone giving me a strange look, and the greeting from lady running the B&B when I arrived was absolutely the same as one would normally expect.

I have spent the last week on the Isle of Man (a 30 mile long lump of rock in the middle of the gap between England and Ireland for those who don't know it). I did not wear trousers at any point between leaving home on Friday and returning home eight days later. This included a very cheap bed and breakfast place in Liverpool (so cheap that they did not do breakfast, just knocked it off the bill) visits to two pubs in Liverpool, one on the Friday evening and another the following morning for breakfast. Both ferry crossings were skirted as were trips to restaurants, pubs, historic places etc.
At no point was I aware of any second glances as a result of my clothing choices and just one chap asked "why the kilt? I had chatted to him a couple of times previously as our dog walking duties seemed to coincide. When he asked I was actually wearing my black top of shoe length Svenjoyment skirt as I walked back to the flat late in the evening although earlier I had spoken to him while wearing a tan skirtcraft and the previous day in a Mountin Hardware "mountain kilt".
By the time we got home Carole had really become convinced that nobody else cares what I wear.
Have fun,
Ian.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
It was unseasonably cold and wet today here in sunny (HA!) New England, so the rig today was my plaid "mini", a teal-green blouse, black velvet-trimmed waistcoat, and black opaque tights.
I got a shouted comment from one gal of, "I love your kilt!" I'll put that in my back pocket in case I need to redeem it at some point in the future.
I was originally going to wear the skirt with a white patterned pair of "trouser sockes" (a-la some of Kilted John's rigs) but recoilled from the notion of being "too school-girl looking".

I think as long as you don't wear a white blouse, navy sweater, and pigtails, and don't shave, you'd be OK.crfriend wrote:?..I was originally going to wear the skirt with a white patterned pair of "trouser sockes" (a-la some of Kilted John's rigs) but recoilled from the notion of being "too school-girl looking".
Oh, and the saddle shoes, the saddle shoes. Save them for another time.

You might consider putting it up for sale here. Might fetch a good price.crfriend wrote: I got a shouted comment from one gal of, "I love your kilt!" I'll put that in my back pocket in case I need to redeem it at some point in the future.

I went to http://www.sfbotanicalgarden.org/flowerpiano/ at the Arboretum here is SF specifically to see a woman play who also hosts a radio program I listen to on Sunday evenings. I spoke briefly to her telling her how much I enjoy her program and she said she liked my kilt. My "kilt" is a kilt skirt I got from Vermont Country Store last fall and the only thing kiltish about it is a non-specific "tartan", the fact that it wraps (left over right though) and it has a kilt pin like accessory. No pleats in back and none of the other kilt accessories. But it was noticed and complimented.

Yeah, it would, but I let my son take my tripod off to college with him, and it is just too complicated to figure out how to balance the camera now from some table or chair.kilty wrote:Sounds like an excellent word picture, but it would be nice to see a picture of your skirtdillon wrote:We went to the local NPR station offices last night for a dinner to hear the final Garrison Keillor broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion. Anyway, things are slow at work so I took a day off and went to the beach with my wife today. I wore the purple Nike Golf skort set I got last fall. It has separate shorts and skirt, so I can take the skirt off and tan or swim in boy-leg shorts. The beach got quite crowded an hour or so after we arrived, and I think some folks were a little surprised to see a man in a purple swimsuit then put on a matching skirt before we left in the early afternoon. We went to a restaurant afterward for a late lunch on the deck, but I changed into my Lee denim skirt and a (clean dry) pale yellow t-shirt, something a bit more conservative for the environment. i finished the rather old second hand paperback I had saved as my "beach book"; I now need to order another or two in the series. i'll shop Ebay tomorrow, but will stay away from skirts. Betabrand had a sale so I ordered another nice skort and what they call "Dress Pant Yoga Pants"; their stuff is soft and stretchy but has a more "professional/work" look to it. The clothing is super-nice, but much more expensive than I am usually comfortable with.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
I went to a Nordstrom Rack store near me last weekend to look around. I was wearing a skirt with black pantyhose and a nice men's shirt tucked in. While trying on various sandals sitting on one of the little benches at the ends of the racks, a middle aged lady sitting on the bench next to me said; "Oh get the black ones, they are cute!" I was shocked, I'm used to people giving me the eye and second glances, but I'm not used to this. I told her thank you and added that most people wouldn't talk to me, and thanked her again. She said "oh why not". I said it's a little unusual for a guy to wear what I'm wearing and trying on shoes in the womens department. She smiled and that was the end of the conversation.
I was delighted, gave me a real boost. I ended buying the black ones and another pair along with a tank top that I really like.

Re: Out and About -- In the World at Large
I returned yesterday from a long weekend in Leicester, England, attending Gothla http://www.gothla.co.uk/, a bellydance/goth event. It was the first occasion I have gone on a long trip without packing any trousers or shorts. Traveling there and back, 3 trains each way, all very crowded as trains are in the UK, in a knee-length cargo skirt. The weather was quite mild, so I wore that skirt for most of the weekend. My wife tells me it turned no heads!
At the Gothla events, there were some other men wearing cargo kilts. To these events I wore a black leather utility kilt, again no reaction. Feels really good to go ahead and just wear what you want. Oh, and as it’s a Goth weekend, black nail varnish on fingers and toes throughout.

I'm sure people can and do wear almost anything to a Goth event and either no one raises an eye or raising eyes is the point of it. But as you found on the train, people really don't care what you wear. So wear whatever you want.
