Broadband speed

Post by Gregg1100 »

I have recently cancelled my Sky package and going back to Virgin. The broadband with Sky was pitiful- ranging from 1.5 mb/sec to 5 mb/sec( on a good day).
To upload some pics to Photobucket took forever, hopefully a lot quicker with Virgin(up to 200mb/sec download). I don't know the upload ratio to download is , but even if it 1/50th of download speed, anything going up will fairly shoot past the sky performance.

What programs are out there now which work on Win 10 to reduce pic sizes for avatars etc, please. ???

I used to use Photosuite 3, but like a lot of other programs, Win 10 doesn't like them. I will have to get my old XP pc fired up- all my favourite progs worked with that. Just as long as I can transfer the images I want to alter to Win 10.

As you mentioned you used Sky Broadband which of these packages did you use? I use Globe for my Internet connection.
EDIT: after going through your post I think you are referring to a different telecom company also named Sky, not the one I know who also provides cable TV service.

Yeah I realized that after going through your post again, as I only know Sky Cable (Philippines). Anyways, have you tried installing Paint.net? it is a good software (that works on Windows 10) that you can use for resizing your pictures.

Sky UK - They do TV by dish, phone by BT ( when wires are not waterlogged in an underground box), and Broadband, also using same waterlogged wires. They also now do fibre optic broadband, but as you will guess is more expensive again.

if you've signed up for the (upto) 200mb/s download speed then you upload speed is (upto) 12mb/s, i find that there upload speeds are pretty much near the quoted max even if the D/L speed doesn't quite get there (rare)

i'm only on 50mb/s (3mb/s upload) but as i'm the only user it's more than fast enough

Basically, I am the only user too, but the 200 mb/s comes with the tv package- Big Kahuna (without films or sport), so I am hoping whatever I do on internet, it will be quick, lol

In answer to your question about an app to reduce picture size try irfanview. It's free and I've been using it for years. Produces a decent image, is easy to use, feature rich and easy to reduce file size in order to produce a file that can be uploaded here.

In terms of ISP - Internet Service Provider - I use what used to be Freeserve, which was bought by Orange and is now EE - Everything Everywhere and is probably soon to be consumed by BT. Everything that goes around comes around. Sigh. As you can tell I have been with them for donkey's years and whilst it may not be the fastest, it's reliable and as I don't need tremendous bandwidth as I don't play online games, download music/videos or upload photos to sites it's fast enough for me.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

We can't get anything close to that speed. We need a public broadband in the US to make the ISPs compete.

That's actually happened in a few forward-thinking cities -- and they've take the service municipal, meaning it's run for the subscribers in town on a non-profit basis! However, it's very sadly the exception to the rule and nowhere near as common as it needs to be.

Unfortunately, that whole notion smacks of socialism.

Without some public interest pressure, there is no incentive for government granted monopolies like phone and cable to compete. When they can reap profits without new investment, why would they invest in improved service? If it takes socialism to remedy that, then I am 100% for it.

Things like this are one of the myriad of reasons why humans form societies -- it's to protect the many from the vested interests of the few. The list of grievances is seemingly endless. Of course that line of thinking is akin to heresy nowadays. "Socialism" is, after all, in these parts, a four-letter word. What would The Donald think about it? The Koch brothers?
