Useful lap
Has anyone else noticed how useful it is to have a lap to hold small items when wearing a skirt?
I've had to remove a contact lens in a hurry because some dirt got under it; spreading my skirt with my knees made sure it couldn't fall on the floor as I took it out. Picking up a collection of small items is easy if you just throw them into your skirt and then gather it up. For sorting out papers, a skirt gives another horizontal surface to spread them over.
The usefulness of normally wearing a skirt was brought home to me last week, when I wore trousers for the first time in ages. We were clearing out a house and stopped for a fish & chips lunch, most of the plates had gone and the remainder were pretty unsavoury. Without thinking, I said "Oh it's all right, I'll just eat them from the wrapping paper in my lap.", then I realised I didn't have a lap!

There is no such thing as a normal person, only someone you don't know very well yet.

Sometimes when I'm wearing trousers I'm almost lost without the ability to catch things in my skirt.

Re: Useful lap
The skirt lap has saved a lot of tiny screws that some times fall when working on my model trains. I just reach down and pick them out of the skirt no bending over or crawling on the floor looking for a screw that is only 1/4 inch long. I love it!!

The catch-it-in-your-lap effect also helps keep the car seat clean. If you eat while driving, crumbs inevitably fall, and they go between the legs if you're wearing pants. But they collect on a skirt, and the next time you get out of the car you can just let the crumbs fall to the ground.

Exactly! I was only thinking the same the other day, for all the reasons stated above. I found I was doing it habitually, dropping batteries out of a handset, etc. No knocking the knees together to catch something.

Oh yeah! You bet I like the lap.
Not having vision it helps to have something catch the things that I drop otherwise they hit the floor and when they hit the floor they just don't stay put nope they roll they skitter they bounce think it up underneath things and I have to go looking for them. Let me tell you that can be quite a process sometimes when you have to do it by Theo. A line so Yep I like the lap!

Ironically, I never care if i drop food or wipe soiled hands on my pants, but am always conscious of doing so in a skirt. I guess I care more for my skirts than for pants!skirtingtheissue wrote:The catch-it-in-your-lap effect also helps keep the car seat clean. Mrs Loftus found out that Huckelberry Finn was a boy when he closed his knees instead of spreading his skirt to catch a ball she dropped in his lap.

Re: Useful lap
You're right Fred. I too take more care of my skirts than my trousers. I would never think of wiping my hands down my skirt but not think twice about my trousers unless they are a very light colour which would show the stains. Novel thought. I always hang my skirt but would just drop my trousers in the pile along with my top and so on.

I was going to mention that story but was too lazy to get around to finding the passage.bobmoore wrote:Mrs Loftus found out that Huckelberry Finn was a boy when he closed his knees instead of spreading his skirt to catch a ball she dropped in his lap.

The only woman you would get to sit in your lap wearing that would be one that sleeps on a bed of nails.

I don't know, as I resisted temptation to buy it - one of those garments you have to wash separately.Sinned wrote: Isn't it a tad uncomfortable because of the fixings behind the studs?

Yes, exactly! I know lots of other people have already said "Me too!" to this, but: "Me too!"pelmut wrote:Has anyone else noticed how useful it is to have a lap to hold small items when wearing a skirt?
