Thanks for reminding me, I haven't worn a skirt to work this month and it is almost over.

Re: Skirts at work
I was back at work today and have had brief discussions with my supervisor and a manager. I told them of my decision and why. I said that it was because of the working environment and that because of this I wouldn't be asking to wear a skirt as standard. This may seem a possibly backwards step in our aim to have skirting accepted but I feel I have achieved the goal in getting that acceptance from both colleagues and customers without compromising my integrity and still maintaining a good rapport with customers. Although it wasn't explicitly said I think there was a bit of relief in this but I also had the impression that should I want to wear a skirt in future then they wouldn't put up any opposition as long as it conformed to the dress code. I feel a lot better about this so that, for instance and very, very unlikely for England, should we get a hot, hot day I could wear a skirt for the comfort and cool factor.
I have put up a picture of what I wore in the Pics section.

Re: Skirts at work
Thanks SS. I feel a bit sad about the decision in a way because I really wanted to be able to wear a skirt at work and if I was just on checkout then it would be a possibility.
But I do more than just punch numbers, take in cash or process cards. Maybe if I change jobs to an office environment where I am just at home then I can make it a reality.

Re: Skirts at work
A bit sorry to hear of your decision - but at least it was your decision and not something imposed on you by "The Management". And you never know, there might yet be those few days in the summer when a skirt is more appropriate for your comfort.
At least then there will not be any negativity from your colleagues or bosses.
I am still wearing skirts to the office several days a week (the days I don't - and wear trousers - are when I go to building sites for meetings). It is a mainly office environment and there has been no adverse comments - just acceptance and work carries on as normal. I also do carry a pair of trousers in case I am called to go to a site NOW.

Re: Skirts at work
Just an anecdote that fits here as well as any other place:
I was feeling a bit more daring than usual, and I knew that my calendar held no lectures, no meetings with the Dean, I could spend the day holed up in my office. So I went with a nice knee-length "office girl" skirt, nylons, and heels. The result is a more femme look than I would normally take at school.
The irony is that at 15.00 the fire alarm went off and we all evacuated to the muster area. Thus endeth my plan of spending the day quietly in my office. More, I took a few extra seconds to save my open files and thus was nearly last to the muster station, walking across the courtyard under the gaze of my entire Department as they all stood looking back toward the building wondering if it was really afire.
Ah well, such is life, eh?
Of course, nobody has said anything. The self-consciousness was all mine, etc. But still, the irony remains a laugh!

I think the only thing that was afire could have been your face!

At least there were no comments

Re: Skirts at work
This is your decision, obviously, but as long your managers are OK with it, another approach might be to wear skirts only one day a week, or one day a month, or only when you're scheduled for a certain type of work. But again, your decision.Sinned wrote:I was back at work today and have had brief discussions with my supervisor and a manager. I told them of my decision and why. Re: Skirts at work
SR and Caultron, I think hot sticky days in summer might be good when I know that I'm on checkout only. But it would have to be on odd days when the workload would permit it and there is one slight complication, which if you've read my posts you will see coming. I was able to do it last Saturday because MOH was ill in bed probably with food poisoning and hence was pretty much out of it and asleep when I left for work and got home so this time I got away with it and she doesn't know that I wore the skirt to work. AND I AIN'T GONNA TELL HER. If she finds out then I'll have to deal with it in some way. Thus any other time I'd have to get it past her and that is fraught with difficulties. I don't like being subversive about it but, as with others on this site, she really doesn't give me much choice. From my perspective I don't have any problem with it but then I do have to live with her day to day and I can't and don't want to walk away from this relationship.
Thank you all for your support and understanding in why I've made this difficult decision. ST you mainly work in an office but even you recognise the limitations on your work skirt wearing. As I've said if I worked in an office then I would certainly go for it with more determination.
ChrisM - that's the way that life has a habit of stiffing us when we least expect it. I think that I would have just accepted the inevitable, held my head up and walked out there with all the confidence that I wouldn't have had. LOL.

Re: Skirts at work
Given my training, I tend to drive the locals more than a bit crazy as I refuse to go into a near-panic and run screaming from the building as I'm more interested in doing a proper risk-analysis and preliminary fire-fight if the need actually exists (of note i that I have *never* experienced a "fire alarm" that presented a credible threat). I have had triage-level fire-fighting training.ChrisM wrote:The irony is that at 15.00 the fire alarm went off and we all evacuated to the muster area. When seconds count, "official" help is only minutes away. One can be self-reliant, or one can be a slave (or dead). Common sense is entirely useful in these sorts of situations; use it.
I'm not saying, "be stupid" -- know your limitations and surroundings. Act sagely, wisely, and within your capabilities at all times -- know when, and how, to retreat. Don't become part of the problem. But don't just throw up your hands, abandon everything, and run in terror.

I use the same protocol in events like that. I take note of the situation and do what I can then exit the building calmly and at a leisurely pace.crfriend wrote:ChrisM wrote:I'm not saying, "be stupid" -- know your limitations and surroundings. Re: Skirts at work
Sinned,
I am in the same situation as yourself. MOH does not know I wear skirts to work either - nor will she. And like you, MOH does not give me any choice in the matter either, and I too do not want to walk away after our many years together.
It is a bit easier for me when I work in Glasgpw, I travel by car to the train station, then get the subway there to work. The car itself becomes a changing room, especially for going back into the house. I do sometimesn change into the skirt before leaving the house as she is now retired and is generally still abed when I leave (around 7:20 or so)

Re: Skirts at work
I didn't wear a skirt to work in March, but I did wear my Skirtcraft skirt to work today (April 1). The usual general lack of reaction that I saw but for the first time I got one comment. I was leaving the building where I work and said good night to the person at the lobby desk. When I got several steps past here so she could see me fully, she called out "Are you Scottish?". I was late for my bus and couldn't stop, so I just called back "Nope".Caultron wrote:Once a month?
