As I understand it, they stay there until read by the recipient.

That is correct, it is so that you will know when your PM was read.

As SS confirmed, they will remain there until read by the recipient. Like you I don't send many PM's but a couple that I have sent, have remained there for several months until I eventually deleted them.

I could also be that they have adjusted/set their preferences to NOT be notified of any PM's.
