According to articles at a computer board I read (extremetech.com) this is a fairly common problem. I haven't had it on my home computer but I have Windows updates set to check for updated but allow me to choose what to download and install.
My Win7 Pro computer at work had an icon show up in the task bar last week offering to download Win10. I hid it so I don't click on it by accident and reported it to our IT director. He was surprised because he was under the impression that enterprise systems weren't being pushed to Win10. The next day ExtremeTech had a story that my little gift was thanks to a IE11 update that had been installed. A link to the story here:

Best not to look if you know they'll be too dear, moonshadow. You may be tempted into a purchase you can't really afford. I did this for a while but eventually went back to Ebay! And if you're patient, there's a chance that the upmarket stuff will turn up there a year or two down the line.

Fortunately, I'm not much of a mail order guy. The skirts I've mail ordered, such as Macabi, Mouseworks, and Skirtcraft I ordered, and paid well for them because there was nothing else like them in actual stores. It's those real life stores that are my weakness. Every time I go into a store with the intent of just spending a certain amount, it seems I always blow the budget about 4 times. It's not just with skirts, it applies to virtually everything I buy, from skirts, DVD's, groceries, etc.

Such as my recent shopping spree, where I snagged 100 cans of a variety of peas, green beans, and corn for 49 cents each.

Honestly, I seem to be waning off the dress thing a bit. It would be one thing if they actually made dresses more fitting to the male structure then that would be different. It's also difficult to find a dress with the wide spread (flare) at the bottom that I desire. It seems most are of the more pencil shape. Most of the dresses that have the desired shape on the bottom have a bodice that's made for enormous breast.

I may snag one here and there, but it's not something I'm actively looking for. Woman Within is blowing every mail box I have up, email and snail mail. Unfortunately, at this juncture my biggest interest is in skirts, and they just don't have a lot of selection in that department. Pretty much everything I see in the skirt page I can find at a thrift shop for a few dollars.

If you're patient and understand prices, you can get the brands, styles, and sizes you like at far better prices than brick and mortar stores. I can't get into buying something I don't really fancy just because it's there on a sale rack. I have a sense of things that fit my personal style and am willing to wait until I see them at a good price. Some people want the instant gratification of coming home with a garment, even if they have "settled for less." That compulsion diminishes with maturity.

I kinda have a problem with all these stories of "forced upgrades"... something just seems downright unethical about it. I can understand not offering support on a product after so many years, but after that, it should be up to the end user to decide if he/she wants to continue to run with the old software and just chance it in regards to security/viruses/etc, or upgrade...

To me, it just sounds like crony capitalism run amuck. And it gets back to my "establishment wants me to upgrade" thread.... granted old software may be more vulnerable to spyware, malware, etc, but modern software just seems to integrated unto the internet, almost to the point where you really can't tell where the internet ends and the OS begins. Before you know it, you won't even be able to boot the blasted things unless you're online!

I can't but think this is all part of "the system" (big brother) watching over his subjects.

I have found a partial answer to this W11 upgrade problem. There is a recommended upgrade with the identifier KB3035583. If you look in Control Panel you will see it. It's fine as long as it hasn't been installed. In CP click on Installed Upgrades. If this upgrade doesn't appear in the list then all you will get is the icon in the task bar and the periodic invitations. On the one machine where it has tried to install then, from what I can gather, I need to go into CP and uninstall this upgrade and hide it. This should stop things but as with MShafting there are reported instances out there that this hasn't stopped the repeated tries to install the W11 OS. Haven't tried it yet so I'll let you know how I get on. If the update is there but hasn't installed then I don't know if you can remove it.
