Peacocks for Carl

Post by dillon »

Please post your videos/pics of fine-feathered men here, in honor of our unbifurcated guru, our Supreme Commander, C.R. Friend...who is indeed a friend to us all.

I'll get the ball rolling with this classic...

And who could ignore Mick Fleetwood's stylish top-dress on the Rumors cover?

Imagine this as a skirt instead of trousers:

Not sure if this you old fella's jam or not... but I thought it had some eclectic styles all the same throughout.

A fun music video to watch...

Warning: There is scattered profanity. Not for those with sensitive ears.

Sometimes I think I ought to watch more new music videos, but then I see one or two and I think "nah...".

I like that dude on the fire escape with the 70's 'fro.

That and the moped salesman.... "have I got the one for you!".... "eight hundred dollars, that's-a helluva deal!"

OK, now that was funny. One problem, though -- there wasn't a single moped in the vid. There were plenty of scooters (and if everything I had to do was within ten miles of home I'd ditch the car in favour of a classic Vespa), a few hogs (I especially liked the bike with a moose head on it), but not even one moped. (Yes, I'm old enough to remember them, and young enough to have ridden one; they're a lot of fun.)

True, (to an extent) on the moped. Scooters are not technically "mopeds", but for the sake of (traffic) law, in Virginia, any motorized two, or three wheeled vehicle with an engine of 50CC's or less is legally considered a moped, scooters included.

From the Code of Virginia, http://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/titl ... n46.2-100/,
"Moped" means every vehicle that travels on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground that (i) has a seat that is no less than 24 inches in height, measured from the middle of the seat perpendicular to the ground; (ii) has a gasoline, electric, or hybrid motor that (a) displaces 50 cubic centimeters or less or (b) has an input of 1500 watts or less; (iii) is power-driven, with or without pedals that allow propulsion by human power; and (iv) is not operated at speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour. For purposes of this title, a moped shall be a motorcycle when operated at speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour. For purposes of Chapter 8 (§ 46.2-800 et seq.), a moped shall be a vehicle while operated on a highway.

Glad you enjoyed the video. The one "Thrift shop" is good too, every time someone mentions thrift shops on this forum I think of that music video...

The above poster is a fantastic example of one of the notions that hog-ties men into the little straitjackets they wear today -- fear of experimentation. Let's face it, any time experimentation is happening, there's always the risk of failure; but we learn from failure, and we move on. If we do not experiment -- and risk failure -- then we stagnate; and I'd say that things are pretty darned stagnant when it comes to men's clothing today. If it was a swamp it'd have to be drained.

The look in the poster isn't merely a creation of the '70s (the last gasp it seems of men's fashion), it's lifted quite neatly from other examples from history, mainly Victorian times (the frock-coat and top-hat) and a little bit of dandy thrown into it, mainly the bow-tie. it's colourful -- certainly not something you'd wear as camouflage, which is what most men's stuff today looks like.

My god, a purple frock-coat. What's not to love about that?

And lets remember the minstrel flamboyance of Ian Anderson...

It looks like something from Elvis Presley's high school prom. So, yeah, I like it.
