Classical Gas

Post by crfriend »

Every so often one runs into a relic from the past, that no matter how hard the "present" tries to intrude upon manages to shine through anyway.

Most who have read me in the past know that I am very musically-resonant, and tend to carry around quite a few tunes in my head which I am able to play on demand in my imagination. This is one of them. But, not only is the music in this one quite good, the video also points up precisely how far men's styles have sunk in the intervening five decades (OK, almost; cut me some slack).

We need to reclaim the role as peacocks. Period. Full stop. I've had enough of jeans, hoodies, and t-shirts. It's time to pull out a few stops and shine once again.

What...no Music Box Dancer? No Penguin Cafe Orchestra? No Kraftwerk? I'm sure every minor hit of the seventies will start coming back to me now. We are not all cut out to be peacocks, however, so be what you feel, flamboyant or not.

And another one...

Quite a while ago, I made the observation regarding the Internet (by way of riffing off David Bowman's comment in 2001: A Space Oddysey) of, "My God! It's full of cats." Unfortunately, I may not have gotten that in early enough to be considered "Original", but I did develop it independently. A different, but similar, riff (above) showed up when I "googled" for the original quote after listening to this, and even though I'm not a big fan of piano music, it brought tears to my eyes.

I miss my cat.

I will stick to a bit of Classical Gas, I had never seen it with pictures but have known the track for years, and years, and years.

No idea when I first heard it. Still like it though.

Life was -- or at least it seems that way now -- quite a bit simpler, if not more innocent. The work that those guys went through to get that sound must've been quite something. The keyboardist/vocalist carried the entire band in that one.

To comment on Dillon's query of, "What, no Music Box Dancer?" all I can say on that is that I've probably remarked on it before, but here's another version this time played on hammered dulcimer.

While we're at it, here's Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag but instead of piano is played on a pedal harpsichord. (And I really want to skin the bonehead at WGBH (a primary US PBS station) for getting ragtime and jazz confused in a recent radio commercial. They really ought to know better. Really.)
