crfriend wrote:Gothic Lolita is interesting, but I have to wonder whether it'd really do at work, and that's the environment where I spend much of my time. I know that some folks here regard some of my looks "forced" -- and, yes, some are a bit -- but lolita takes "forced" to another level altogether. I'd say it's fine for cosplay, but don't really think it'd work in the day-to-day "real world". (I also think that lolita would look utterly naff on a bloke already into his second half-century on the planet. Younger guys might well be able to pull it off in some situations, though. i cannot, at least not without much laughter from those around me.)
Me, as much as I'd love to try it out, I can't really think of a situation that would be suitable for such attire. I'm not really much into the social scene, I'm mostly a home body who more or less takes rides and walks through various towns. Not really into clubbing, or parties where such garments might be appropriate (depending on the nature of the club/party). I wouldn't dare take them into the woods with all the brambles and mud holes I get myself into. As far as the more public arena, it's mostly just me doing my daily routine, grocery shopping, pumping gas, paying bills, etc.

It would be another classic case of "all dressed up and nowhere to go".

Also as I google images of Gothic Lolita... I see a number of red flags for me.... of course the attention given to the bust area for boobs I don't have, and lest we forget 80% of the models pictured are Asian.... and we all know what that means..... teacup sized waist.

i like the gothic lolita look and there are events and goth alternative club nights in the UK where even a bloke into his second half century could wear them (and some do) without issues, sadly as moonshadow says the dresses tend to be made in asia and that means they have teacup sized waists, it is possible to get them custom made to size (and thus the bust area problem will also be fixed) there are even sites on the internet that state custom made for both male and female, the only thing that stops me buying a lolita dress is the extortionate prices for something that would get limited wear.

I enjoy being laughed with, it's being laughed at I don't much like. Yes, I know that it's "spreading the joy", but for the most part I don't particularly like being the butt of that sort of joke. (Now, being on the receiving end of a very well-played practical joke is something else altogether so long as everyone winds up laughing about it afterwards.)

Also, if I'm getting laughed at it means that whatever look I've tried to put together has been an abject failure (a failure of the "believability test").

Hey guys, I've had a really great idea. Why don't we start a thread which is purely for telling everyone when you see another skirted man?
Keep on skirting,

You mean every time I pass by a mirror I have to write home about it ! LOL !

The odds on any given day of seeing such an occurrence are akin to a chance winning the lottery !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

What a daft idea; it would never catch on  (As a group, we are far too good at thread drift...)

Have fun,

A thread just responding to the idea of this thread would obviously catch on, otherwise the term threadbare comes to mind

I keep hoping I'll see more skirted guys but except for some female impersonators that came to the coffeehouse about two months ago, I haven't seen a one (except myself in a mirror of course). Alas and alack. Maybe things will change.

Just consider yourself one in a million. I'd like a FEW more of us out there, but if it became a popular trend, I often wonder if it would mean as much. I sort of enjoy being a rebel and an oddity.

I think there is some way to go before much larger numbers of men wearing skirts affect your enjoyment of being a bit of a rebel.
