People that don't live in Texas don't know how big it is.
- Driving from East to West on I-10 is about 879 miles.
This drive, at normal speeds will take 13 hours and 30 minutes.
- Driving from North to South is about the same mileage and time.
- It covers 268,820 Square Miles
- Dallas to Houston is nearly the same distance as Paris to London
- 7.4 percent of the entire surface area of the United States
- Brewester county in Texas is 6,208 square miles making it
larger than the states of Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island
- DFW (Dallas Ft. Worth) airport is the size of Manhattan
- If Texas were a separate country, it would have the 12th largest
GDP in the world ahead of Mexico, South Korea and Australia
- Texas is almost half the size of the Planet Pluto
- Although six flags have flown over Texas, there have been
eight changes of government: Spanish 1519-1685, French 1685-1690,
Spanish 1690-1821, Mexican 1821-1836, Republic of Texas 1836-1845,
United States 1845-1861, Confederate States 1861-1865,
United States 1865-present
- The state was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845
- The state's cattle population is estimated to be near 16 million

It's just I've heard several people complain that
it's too much trouble, and far, to go from - say
Frankfort to Brussels, or Paris to Madrid.

What does gas cost over there?. I'm paying 2.25 USD per gallon here.

In Wales at the moment, petrol is 99p a litre- just under a £1. There is roughly 4.5 litres to a gallon (UK), so basically £4.50 a gallon. A fair bit more than what you pay. It is only because of the supermarket wars that have brought prices down- left up to oil companies, it would be a lot more for a litre. Thieving ratbags. Not too long ago, it got to £1.40 for a litre, sometimes more in outlying areas.

We pay around £1.08 for a litre of gas just now. works out at about £4.10 for a US gallon. Slightly less for petrol. According to SIRI, £4.10 is $5.96 just now.

I fill up every Sunday in Dublin where there is a discount outlet. Our taxation makes diesel cheaper than petrol, so we're paying Eur 1.09 and 1.23 respectively per liter. With Sterling still some 33% up on the Euro we're cheaper than the UK, but still way more expensive than in the USA.

.....and as to traffic densities... Outside the immediate area around Dublin there are no hold ups Country wide here. You might just get yourself behind a herd of cows or a flock of sheep in the remote Western reaches, though!

.....and where size counts, well, we've got it in spades. Put Ireland on a map of Texas or Alaska or wherever and you'd think it was a little smudge to be rubbed out!

In the UK, the bulk of the fuel cost is TAX broken down to approx 40% fuel cost, 40% Duty and a further 20% VAT (value added tax) - i.e 60% of the pump price in total goes in taxes. It is also the highest fuel cost in the EU.

If all that tax was removed, we would pay approx 40p per litre (~£1.80 per gallon) but it'll never happen though!

Gas is only $1.77 here, and we are twenty-plus hours drive east of Houston. I'd wager South Carolina has cheaper gas than Texas. Don't tell me the Democrat idea of taxing fuel to encourage energy efficiency is catching on in Texas?
