On the US being an empire, I think this map of military bases is educational:

You can find a partial list of U.S. military interventions from 1890 to 2014 at http://academic.evergreen.edu/g/grossma ... tions.html.
Of course, it depends on your definition, but I'd say the evidence for the US being an empire is strong.

I define it in the classical sense, by lands under direct governance, such as India and Egypt et al were to Britain. Hegemony is a fairly vague concept.

You might want to also list the interventions of European powers during that timeframe. I would expect the rate to be similar albeit skewed toward the post-war period for the US.

Wait wait wait..... I think we all are missing the obvious oversight in this thread..... since when does ANY politician "THINK"? (at least about anything other than their selves?)

Sorry, I couldn't resist....

"Question:

Should I write a letter to my Congressman?

Reply:

Each Congressman has two ends:

a sitting and a thinking end!

Since his whole success depends upon his seat,
why bother, friend?"

And that is my take on politics - a word derived from Latin:
"Poli" - meaning "many" and "Tics" - meaning "blood sucking creatures"!

I heard a rumor that there is going to be a major economic
downturn here in the USA that may have political ramifications.

The downturn will be so severe, that the Koch Brothers will have
to lay off 7 congressmen 4 senators and a couple of State governors.

Personally, I'm hoping the GOP stays on its current path of rushing to nominate the most petty, hateful, and extreme of its candidate field; that would be the most poetic justice for all the Koch money thrown into a wing of the party that would rather "send a message" than win an election. Let it remain a party that is afraid to govern, and learn to be careful what they wish for. The worst thing for America would be if the Grand Old Party ("party" being the operative term) should sober-up and relegate Trump and Cruz to the status of a very bad hangover.

After hearing that Palin is teamed up with Trump, but apparently using him to fundraise for herself, I seem to have one of those annoying songs stuck in my head. This time it's Send In The Clowns.

If Trump has already signed the pledge of allegiance to the moneyed elite class he'll simply represent Dubya's fifth and sixth terms in office (we're in the last year of Dubya's 4th term now) no matter how idiotic he sounds on the stump; if he hasn't signed, he'll either not get close to the ballot or will be removed from the field by other means. The same goes for Sanders. This is all-out class warfare, and the elites mean to win at all costs.

One thing I would find hilarious is if the UK actually does ban Trump from entering UK territory and he does get "elected" in the USA.

One needs to look at the humour -- and possibilities for same -- in this; otherwise it's enough to make a real patriot cry.

My money's on Hillary; she has first-hand experience in witnessing what the elites can do to a sitting president without even resorting to "harsher" tactics. She'll toe the line very closely and represents the least-risk candidate for the power-brokers. We have had our last renegade President.

I have been concerned about the legacy of Clinton scandals, but as long as Republicans keep annointing fools, I'm not concerned. After watching her demolish Trey Gowdy in the Benghazi Hearings, she will have no problem dispatching the likes of Trump or Cruz. So, she has won my vote. How ironic to see all that Koch money backfire on the GOP! When you spend billions to enlist the allegiance of idiots, you end up with idiocy. Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it!

Palin's endorsement of Trump is essentially America's worst idiot endorsing America's worst bigot.
