Skirtcraft Kickstarter is Live

Joe, thanks for all your effort in getting the Skirtcraft skirt to its successful conclusion. Even though black was not my first choice in color, I signed up because I've been wearing skirts exclusively on weekends and wanted another one for that purpose. I may switch to khaki for my Kickstarter skirt and if I like it enough come back for black when you start selling from inventory.

Firstly I'd like to echo the previous post and thank you for the time and effort it has taken to get this far. Getting a men's skirt to market is not a trivial task so considerable kudos is due to you for getting to this point.

Secondly, I can confirm that the Kickstarter pledge has been collected. I had a call from my credit card provider to check that the payment to Kickstarter was one I had authorised. Apparently Kickstarter has been used a few times to launder payments from stolen credit cards, I guess it is good to know that they are keeping their eyes open for fraudulent transactions.

Looking forward to a package containing two skirts turning up on my doorstep in a couple of months.

I certainly agree with Ian's first paragraph. Likewise my payment has been collected, and I also had a call from the credit card company.

I went to the website logged in and filled in my size and colour as requested. The site seemed to be running very slowly so I hope it went through ok. I'll find out in a couple of months !

Update:

Those who did not buy a skirt may like to know that the batch of skirts has been made and shipped. According to the USPS tracking site mine have now left London Heathrow, (probably on their way to the Post office international receipts depot where they will decide how much duty they want to charge me )

Fingers crossed, I'll have two new skirts in my wardrobe by the end of next week.

I received mine at my office on Monday. It may have even been in town on Saturday since it was sent USPS Priority which commonly gives two day service across country.
I wore it at home last night and again this morning. It appears to be well made, no loose threads or fraying fabric edges. As expected, the denim is a little heavier than my other skirts. We'll see if it gets more fluid in movement after it is washed. It's never going to be floaty, but could be a great bicycling skirt. It's cut to fit a man, slimmer through the hips.

I think my skirt too is at Heathrow. Did a quick check and Duty is not payable if the goods are less than £135 (including shipping)

VAT seems to be payable at 20% though I don't think this was have been included in the Skirtcraft costs as it is a local (ie UK) tax.

VAT is payable, no question about that given that the USA is not (yet? ) a part of the EU. There is also a processing charge levied by the Post Office. IIRC last time I paid import charges the handling fee was £8 and the VAT was about £3, making £11 total.

The actual charges levied do seem to be a little random though, sometimes when I have been expecting to be charged I have got away with it, other times I've not been so lucky.

My two arrived this morning - no extra duty to pay. All is well.
I wore it out today just because it had arrived - and then later I read the instructions I realised that they need washing to shrink it to size. That explained why I thought the fit a bit loose... Too eager.
So now awaiting washing then I can feel the better fit. Good side pockets, feel like trouser pockets. The lower zip pockets are voluminous! You can get a lot of stuff in there. The only issue I had today was remembering in which pockets I had put all my stuff. The material is a medium/heavy weight and will benefit from its initial wash to remove some of the stiffness, I think it will hang better then.

I agree it seems a little loose, and so I'll give it a wash before doing anything drastic.

I'm hoping it'll hang straighter after a wash too.

I'm not sure the front belt loops are in the best place. They seem equally spaced outside the waist button, which is normally OK, but because of the diagonal zipper the waist button isn't centered, and so the belt buckle ends up not centered. Or is the belt buckle not supposed to be centered? If so, I'm not sure I like that.

With the waist button not centered, centering the entire skirt was a bit tricky too. The best approach seems to be putting my hands in the slash pockets and twisting the skirt around until my hands line up equal.

I'm looking forward to receiving mine shortly. Sounds as though after an initial try on it will need a wash. Given the material I reckon, that like a couple of my kilts, the feel will gradually improve over the first few washes.

Yes, the skirts should feel noticeably softer and have a somewhat improved drape after washing. I forgot to mention that in the info sheet which is enclosed with the packages, but I was reminded of it when I washed my own new skirt a couple of days ago. Most denim jeans are softer when purchased because they've been pre-washed, but the skirts have not had this done. The fabric has undergone a pre-shrinking process, although there is further shrinking that occurs during the first wash: about 1 inch in the waist and 1/2 inch in length.

Caultron, I do the same thing (hands in pockets) to align the skirt. The asymmetric design does lead to the button being off-center, and the thought is that the belt buckle would be worn aligned with the button and thus also off-center. It is somewhat odd having a belt loop near the center, but I thought it was important to have belt loops nearby on either side of the button. So function over convention was the idea. I hope you don't find it too awkward.

I got home yesterday to find a large brown envelope (with Skirtcraft logo) waiting for me. Unfortunately, I also found a list of jobs that had to be done, which prevented me doing more than opening the envelope to check that there were two skirts inside.

This morning I have taken them out and had a really good look at them. Wow! Not one loose thread or small offcut of cotton. All the stitching perfectly straight and consistent and, as a bonus, the skirts are both wearable without needing to be ironed first. I'm impressed! The fit is loose as expected and I will get both in the machine later today for an initial wash to take a little of the oversize out of them. I'm not sure whether there is a need to wash dark colours separately but, given that my son tends to live in black jeans and t-shirts, a dark wash for the black one and a lighter colours wash for the other will be easy to arrange and probably a wise move.

All being well, one of the skirts will get its first public outing tomorrow.

Thanks Joe, all the signs are that you have an excellent product and I, for one, am wondering what the second Skirtcraft design will look like
