Skirts made for men

Hi everyone. I've actually been here before but can't remember my username or password.

I have been increasingly curious how popular skirts actually made for men seem to be and what ones exist if any. Not a kilt or even a variant of, but a skirt made with male proportions and appropriate fabric, fastening etc. As an example think of the difference between mens and women jeans, or smart black trousers. Or something like mens shorts with one tube instead of two. As ever there are probably fewer styles or overall appearances men could carry off, but at least garments that bring the skirt into the normal male wardrobe. A few obvious would be jeans style, smart black, tartan (but not kilt like pleating) to name a few.

I do the best I can with casual kilts and 'unfeminine' ladies skirts (like the sort I've listed) , but this sort of thing sounds like it could work.

Sean Miley Moore off the X Factor UK was an interesting contestant (sadly voted out today), he nearly always wore knee length pencil skirts (the best skirt type for a man due to its masculine straight shape) which looked smart, but he would ruin it by wearing ones covered in sequins or tight PVC ones. A simple business pencil skirt, such as what a girl would wear to work, in typical mens colours of grey, black, navy work well for me, they are cheap as well. Other alternatives are denim pencil skirts, some do up on the guys side zip wise, I generally always chose one that's knee length with a generous slit at the back, that way, if the skirt is tight I can still walk comfortable enough in it.

I find mens skirts, and not kilts are more expensive as they are a niche product, so I just settle for a manly enough looking skirt in the women's side of the aisle.

Skirts for men are popular enough that Skirtcraft recently completed a Kickstarter to fund a production run that will ship later this month. They were supposed to ship right about now; but according to Joe, the entire run was sent back to the factory to add the belt loop that was left off. Search this site for Skirtcraft and you should find a long thread on the gestation and birth of this project.

Cargo skirts are pretty good, similar to mens shorts or jeans, tough material with belt loops and pockets but with just one hole. Worn low on the waist they fit well.

I have a khaki twill cargo skirt that has been my hiking skirt for several years. Picture in the Pics and Looks section, but you'll have to dig back a couple/three years.

Thanks guys. I'm sure there were these discussions about womens trousers about 100 years ago, now no-one thinks twice about it. I recall a Manchester based company doing this but they seem to have gone to the wall. Heres wondering if we will eventually find these in the mens at M&S, JL, Tesco and the like.

The Manchester based company who tried selling skirts you are thinking of is probably MidasClothing and it has indeed disappeared but they still exist on Facebook, though there is little activity on it. (last entry is Nov 2013)
