Woof !
Woof !
In August we lost the favourite amongst our almost 16 yr old collie cross dogs. Sadness all round and especially for MOH, who spied his replacement pretty sharply.
This month I was presented with a fait accomplis in the 'person' of 'Minnie haha', an enormous 1 yr old Caucasian Shepherd, pure bred, fortunately female, so she instantly gets on with our now 9 yr old resident non-nuclear deterrent, Benjy, a German Shepherd, who is not as big!
On Day One this animal unsurprisingly escaped our dog fortress, went on the rampage around the grounds, orchard and eventually the poultry run, killing no fewer than 17 good layers, the ducks & geese taking refuge on their pond. When we got back there were escapee hens in the woods and hedges, too afraid to return to be fed that evening.
We (I) then set about fortifying the fortress until at last the new arrival is contained and MOH intends keeping her. As she is just a puppy she will be around for the forseeable. She certainly presents as a formidable potential human limb chewer, which is just what we need in the Styx out here, never far removed from the mobile circulating low-lifes.

Beautiful pet, Tom. We have a ten year old Irish Setter. (Okay, go ahead and call me a dope, but she was free) I had raised Gordon Setters before and probably will again at least once more. I love those dogs.

"Enormous". "8-stone". "Puppy". That's not a dog, that's a small bear!
What calibre of "low-life" are we talking about? Yikes!

Round these rural parts there are drug-toting thugs driving fast hatchbacks preying on isolated houses for what they can steal. They will cheerfully bludgeon old people into the bargain.
Out at country properties the response time is slower than in the towns and getaway routes are traffic free.
Packs of domestic dogs like we have are generally avoided by these predators as there are easier targets nearby. In 15 years we haven't been burgled so far.
Dillon, I too have a weakness for setters. My father kept two gundogs, a springer spaniel and a setter, but MOH decides what hounds we get, so setters haven't featured yet.
