Every day on the interstate I'm surrounded by the middle class, take a ride through Washington County VA, middle class everywhere! These are people who live in $200,000 houses, drive $50,000 cars and $70,000 trucks.
How much of that do you suppose is financed by debt? Are their jobs so secure that they can really afford such things? How much of it do they actually own compared to what's owned by the banks? (Meta-question: "Who owns the banks?") I believe that if you dig deep enough you'll find that the bulk of who claims to be "middle class" are, in fact, in debt so deeply that they'll never see the light of day. That's not prosperity; that's indentured servitude -- and also making the insane assumption that your employer is going to keep paying you so you can pay the interest on those debts.

One cannot take things at face value any longer; one needs to dig a bit below the surface. Quite clearly we learnt precisely nothing from the go-go banking mentality that pretty much collapsed the house-of-cards in '08. Predatory "lending" is as rampant now as it was in '07. Why is it allowed? Because the elites are getting wealthier because of it.

Yes, there's a lot of money out there; unfortunately, it's just clinging to fewer and fewer individuals and families. For everybody else, it tends to go out as quickly as it comes in. Spending one's self into debt to keep up with the neighbours is a waste of time and effort -- and is ultimately very dangerous. How many McJobs do you suppose the type in a $200,000 house will need to "work" to meet the interest payment alone, much less actually acquire any equity? Will the McJob be there tomorrow? Next week? What's the burn-rate? How long can they get by without a pay-check and without a safety-net? (The main reason the "unemployment" numbers look so good is because of how many people have fallen through the bottom of that safety-net and are no longer counted; this is conveniently swept under the rug by the media who refuses to talk about it.)

Recall that entire empires have gone bust because of debt. Individuals are not immune.

Deleted anything that didn't have to do with skirts, or awesome places to buy them.

Here in the Philippines, if a certain politician or businessman gets greedy and exploits the mases, that person would immediately develop a large hatedom among the people (especially in social media) that would result in protests to resign for the politician or strikes and/or legal action for the businessman. A good example of a businesswoman who colluded with politicians to illegally increase her wealth is Janet Lim-Napoles and her PDAF scam, which involved Napoles setting up fake NGO's for politicians to send pork barrel funds to, which she then collects. And yes, several senators and congressmen were involved in the scam. As a result of this scam being uncovered, many people went in protest actions against the pork barrel system as it is a source of corruption, and the pork barrel system was later declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. And how about Napoles? She is now in jail for an associated illegal detention case regarding a whistle-blower who revealed the details on the PDAF scam.

Just my 2 cents from my experience here in the Philippines :D

Mod Hat - ON

This thread is a great example of proper etiquette and decorum by
the forum members. For this, I thank you :!:

No flames have been lit - yet,
but my instincts tell me that may come to pass.

This is not a political, policing forum. Many have shown that good DOES
triumph over evil. So, steer this thread back to skirt/kilt wearing/purchasing
locations or it will be locked.

Yep. Much to Dick Cheney's chagrin (remember his statement "Ronald Reagan taught us that deficits don't matter.") I'm pretty sure being a debtor nation disqualifies the US from ever being a bona fide empire. So there's the silver lining to the dark cloud. My last political thought, Al.

Back to topic (sorry for contributing to the derailment of the topic), I find the best place to buy cheap stuff would be at markets like at Quiapo and Divisoria at Manila, Philippines. Sure you may find knockoff stuff, but you could find lots of good stuff at reasonable prices, and the prices are usually negotiable with the vendors. I bought my malongs from Muslim clothing stores in markets like these. I don't know if there are similar markets in countries like the US, but here in the Philippines they are a go-to place for lots of cheap stuff.

Yeah, it's good to have the thread fixed....

Getting back to this particular Goodwill, while I'm certain there are larger ones, this one in particular is worth a stop if you are passing through as I was pretty impressed with it. In fact, we went back today and purchased 2 more skirts (will add some photo's later on my photo thread).

But it's not just skirts, they have isles and isles of garments for men and women of all different styles, shapes, and sizes. I'd say this store is good for "freestyling" ideas.

They even had a whole wall of dresses, some of which I found interesting and started to buy one (my daughter was begging me to), however I wasn't on a "dress hunt" today.

Not to mention, I don't know if it was the community, or the fact that my daughter was with me and we were clearly having a good time (laughing, cutting up, and carrying on in the isles), but the people at the store, both customers and employees were very friendly acting. In fact, one female customer was trying to talk ME into purchasing a slinky little red night gown..... granted that wasn't what I was in the market for, but I was blown away by her acceptance....

... almost felt like "one of the girls".... Not sure if this is a good thing or not...? :?:

At this point I would like to point out I was wearing my knee length black skirt I purchased at Ross (one of my favorites) during the day. So it was clear to bystanders that the skirts were for ME.

Maybe Galax isn't as backward as I thought!

I77 in Virginia, get off on exit 14 for those of you passing through.

The average home price in Melbourne is now over $500 000, the great Australian dream of having your own home is now out of reach for most people.

Another good stop, IF this is your style. (I understand it may not be everyone's cup of tea)

Misty Mountain Designs
Bristol Virginia (in the mall)
Bristol Tennessee (State street)
(two locations)
Note: The VA location (in the mall) will run about 4.75% cheaper than the TN location due to sales tax differences. It's also located right off the interstate, right off exit 1 on I81 in Virginia.

Not Goodwill prices, but still not unreasonable considering that these skirts can be difficult to locate offline (in brick and mortar stores)

I stopped at their mall location today with my daughter and picked up a REALLY cool skirt that stretches out greater than 180 degrees (I'm not exaggerating, I'd put it at maybe 200 degree span).

Fellas I have found that "hippie" look I have been searching for. I will definitely be making more visits to this establishment in the future. The average price for a skirt seems to run anywhere from $35-$55. The one I purchased today was $43. Again, not dirt cheap, but worth every penny all the same. I'd like to try to pick up at least one skirt every 4-6 weeks from this store.

Atmosphere:

The ladies that were working the store were VERY cheerful and pleasant. The whole store has a very calm vibe, and smells of incense. The music that was playing was cool too.

I LOVE this skirt, I changed into it again after I paid for it in their fitting room and wore it for the rest of the day. We then took it down to the heart of Northeast Tennessee at the Johnson City Mall in Johnson City Tennessee This mall was very crowded, lots of teenagers and young adults. I got LOADS of stares, and my family reports a few laughs and gawks. But today it didn't matter, I was rocking this skirt.

Purchased some fuel off the interstate on the way home, I walked out of the double doors towards the parking lot with a pepsi in my hand. The gentle breeze flared the skirt out in all directions, the fuel island was full of people pumping gas, almost everyone was staring my way, I just smiled, unscrewed the cap, and began drinking my soda. I swear I believe I may have even "strutted" a bit. Like a BOSS!

An excellent choice, moonshadow. It's a nice sensation, have a long skirt swish around you as you move. I don't have one anywhere near as light or swishy as that, bug it must be great to wear. Nice pattern too.
Keep on skirting,

Thanks, I have come to really enjoy it! When the wind hits it just right, it will trail out from behind about as far as it is long. It certainly has a gracefulness about it. And yes, the swooshing on bare skin in a gentle breeze is awesome!

Only downside is it is a lot of fabric to keep up with. It has a tendency to get caught under chair legs, and you must make sure to get the whole skirt in the car, which normally takes two grabs. But the effort is worth the reward. All told, it's a very comfortable garment.

A lot of fun to freestyle dance in!
