Retirement

Post by dillon »

After 34+ years working for the State of North Carolina in various capacities, I am preparing to retire, at age 57, and hoping to find a new job in the same field, but a project-specific job. I'd like to be able to focus on just one matter and give it my best. With my youngest in college and bills to pay, I cannot afford to not work...but with 60+ % salary available for doing nothing, I cant go much further in my current post, especially with a Republican Legislature that takes a political posture of "Blame the State Employees" right up to the point where they inevitably figure out they really do need us. Since my retirement is based on my years of highest earnings, and the GOP legislature has not kept our pay advances up even to the (honest) rate of inflation, I see no future in my current post.

But I hope to continue in my chosen avocation, the field of Agronomy. I just want to share my favorite quote: Jonathan Swift, from Gulliver's Travels.

“And he gave it for his opinion, that whoever could make two ears of corn, or two blades of grass, to grow upon a spot of ground where only one grew before, would deserve better of mankind, and do more essential service to his country, than the whole race of politicians put together.”

And my second favorite Swift quote is this:

“take a strict view of their excrements, and, from the colour, the odour, the taste, the consistence, the crudeness or maturity of digestion, form a judgment of their thoughts and designs; because men are never so serious, thoughtful, and intent, as when they are at stool...”

Good call and Good Luck.
In your shoes I would be afraid very afraid to stick it out till the elections 11/2016.
There is going to be way too much bloody fireworks !
"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

I was having a discussion with a co-worker of mine who came to us from a local county school system in Tennessee. I was surprised how government work *really* works. I guess it's not really the pie job I thought it was.

Best of luck to you!

Maybe you can find something in your chosen field up here in the Virginia coal fields! We need another skirt wearer up here!
