Middle Age and the Miniskirt

Post by JeffB1959 »

I've work skirts of any and all lengths over the years, and, at the risk of sounding egotistical, I think there's no length I don't look good in, and that includes miniskirts as I've worn them as short as 15 inches like in the picture below. Now, this brings up a question: at 56, graying hair and all, would I be considered too old to wear skirts that short? Hell, the majority of women my age wouldn't wear a mini, but what about men? Personally, I don't see this as a problem, societal or otherwise, and I've never gotten anything in the way of negative comments while out and about, and, again, letting my ego have its moment, I love showing off my legs, plain and simple. If you're a skirt wearing man of middle age like myself, what's your views on wearing minis? Do you feel comfortable in them? Do you worry (or care) about how people will perceive you? Please share your opinions.

There's nothing wrong with the way you look in your miniskirt, if you have the legs and body to pull it off, why not. I am all most 64 and also like to wear my denim mini. :D

I am middle aged, assuming I am going to live to over 120 and have a have hair and a beard that has much more salt than pepper. I live in a warm climate and have always worn short shorts so I am comfortable with exposing my legs. I judge my mini skirt length by the length of shorts I am willing to wear down to the post office - hence 12 inches is my limit and 14 inches I am very comfortable with. If I look in the mirror (or a remote photo which is sometimes more instructive) and am happy with the look, then I am not worried what about other people think. Style of clothing is a personal choice and there is more and more freedom these days; I think saggers look ridiculous but I don't comment and they are unaware or wouldn't care what I think. So far I am just a summer seasonal skirt wearer so the short length seems quite rational.
It is true that a lot of mature women would like to wear short skirts but don't because of conventional thinking, which is sad. Men are breaking convention by wearing a skirt anyway so there are no preconceptions as the length - yet - so if we get in quick and create a precedent for short skirts, then hopefully they will be as acceptable as traditional kilt length ones.
I think your outfit looks great. In the unlikely event you ever received a negative comment it would most likely be generated by leg envy - male or female.

Every so often I try putting on a mini, and sometimes I feel it "works" and sometimes I feel it doesn't. I enjoy the sensations they offer, but worry about having them look right on my physique -- and the latter is getting worse and I am back in a downward weight spiral again thanks to that old nemesis stress.

That's a great look Jeff and you have the body to pull it off. And the wedge sandals give it a nice touch.

This is a great observation from denimini. As rule benders, we can make our own rules and are not tied down by the silly rules women impose on themselves. And now we men have the opportunity to set trends for the women to follow. Think about that.

Sure, if you have the physique and confidence to wear it well, go ahead!
"Mutton dressed as lamb", is still that, male or female.
Age and situation appropriate is still valid for both genders. On a daily basis, I would not wear a shorter than knee length skirt at work.
Indeed, I have had that remarked on by some colleagues.
Off duty and with no one to pass a valid judgement is different. That's when I try to play with the lengths and styles.
I use a simple premise, comfy works, not comfy does not!
I remember an old post here, the gist was, "I like wearing minis but I'm afraid to sit down when I'm wearing one". Why would you put yourself through this for a few inches less length?
Minis are certainly fun, midis are comfy and maxis look like too much work.
Steve.

Well past middle age, and never used to wear anything shorter than just above the knee, but men are now wearing short shorts again, so I have been wearing a short denim skirt I got for 2€ in a street market last year, new, and a wrap skirt I found on eBay recently; both 42 cm long. Not quite a mini perhaps, but short enough considering all that a man has to hide in a skirt.

Steve.
Luckily mutton only applies to ewes and wethers so us non-castrated older males still have a reprieve as far as wearing minis.

Well, I am 61 and really enjoy wearing my 14-15" mini-skirts (denim, beige or black faux leather) -> pics elsewhere. I am slim and think minis look good on me! (my view)

I have have great comments from women as well! Also had some smiles and thumbs up from other men too!

I have three minis, by which I mean about 16" long. That is quite short enough, as far as I am concerned. I rarely wear them because the weather in this part of the world is so reliably hopeless. This year especially. But it won't be long before the weather is cold as well as wet, so I can wear them with opaque tights (the only type I wear).

When I'm unused to wearing a mini (i.e. most of the time), I do feel slightly unprotected at first, but I quickly forget about that. Then I feel just fine. However if bare-legged, I only wear a mini if I don't expect to be sitting down very much - even at 16" I find I have to think too much about not flashing.

There's a certain extra shock value to wearing a mini, and I enjoy it. My choir are thoroughly used to seeing me in a skirt, but the time last winter when I turned up in a mini and bottle green tights, I managed to draw several very surprised looks. Similarly on holiday in Spain I found that my mini & bare legs look earned me many sidelong glances from the locals in the village we stayed in. Not so much when we moved down to the touristy Costa - nobody seemed to notice, far less care. Anyway, it was nice to wear in the heat so I wore it.

I think my legs look quite good in a mini and tights. You are welcome to browse through my Pics & Looks thread and form your own opinion; if you disagree you are welcome to keep your opinion to yourself! Mrs SS disagrees strongly, and implores me to get rid of my minis whenever she sees me in one. I have no intention of obliging her.

In short, minis are fun to wear!
Keep on skirting,

Alastair

I have quite a few minis, some as short as 14 inches, and MOH says that I have good legs so I don't worry about conventions - I also am 61 and I just say to hell with it and wear what I like. I would tailor that to wearing to the occasion - there are occasions and places where a mini wouldn't be appropriate, to church for instance.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

I am 70yrs old and I enjoy wearing skirts that are about 18" long. They work well for hiking and cover enough to look nice. The best ones I find are the Nike Golf Dri Fit ones. They look good and are cool enough to making hiking fun. I have some denim ones but use them only when it is cooler outside. I guess I am getting old enough to really not care what the person on the street thinks. Most just do not notice or do not care anyway.
