Totally Obsessed with Russian Music
Totally Obsessed with Russian Music
I think YouTube is the greatest invention there ever was.
Czech this out : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3snCSxRBtwU
It's not only ironic that I'm not Russian myself, but that I get links to all the best Russian songs from my friend in KCMO.
And my Russian friend thinks my brain is fried for listening to music like this.
I used to live in Ukraine and I can tell you this is for real. I love the amateurishness, and the genuineness.
I really, really miss Mukachevo.
Why I even moved out?

Well Crazyman,
I see no-one responded to your post of almost a month ago. That clip has a pretty girl in the center stage doing nothing in particular, as are her friends. Touch of the Eurovision Song Contest about that number...They state the theme in the first half minute and repeat it throughout with no worthwhile variation at all. Heavy reliance on lighting, as all young bands do nowadays. I have no knowledge of Russian, Ukrainian or Czeck, so the lyrics are lost on me.
In a previous incarnation in the '80s I 'did' the music for an Am-Dram pantomine....'Little Red Riding Hood', and we emphasised the 'Red', as all the big numbers throughout were Russian. (Lara's theme, Midnight in Moscow, Those were the days, Kalinka &c.) While I thumped piano I did however have the services of a first class Prima Balalaika player, who happened to live locally and a very good violinist who did among other things a little 'Fiddler on the Roof' cameo.
I DO like good Russian music, but totally obsessed, no. There's an awful lot of super stuff out there.
Tom

I guess it's because I am of that particular descent. I just don't live there anymore and listening to it always reminds me of home
And yeah, it is kind of in the Eurovision style, which I also like!

Re: Totally Obsessed with Russian Music
I really like sacred Russian Orthodox music, especially Rachmaninov. I'm intrigued with the deep notes the second or third basses reach in his compositions, down to Bb1 (below the bass staff). And yes, I can sing down to that pitch. My favorite selection is Rachmaninov Vespers - 5 Now Lettest Thou Depart. Here is a You Tube URL:

And I am the same individual taking estrogen for M2F HRT. I am living proof estrogen does NOT raise the pitch of one's voice.

With all the delicious single malt whiskies in Scotland I'm surprised you didn't mention whisky! I do love single malt scotches but alas they are rather dear. I also really like Guinness stout. I like my beers to be hearty. Do you know how making love in a canoe is the same as Coors Light?skirtyscot wrote:I would need to have 5 Guinnesses and an early start the next morning to get anywhere near as low as that!
They are pretty f**king close to water!

Whisky doesn't have the same loosening effect on the vocal chords as beer!

Re: Totally Obsessed with Russian Music
Yes it does for me. When I have a lot of whisky the night before I have been known to sing down to F1 (4 ledger lines) below the bass staff in the morning. I do cut my whisky with water and ice. We all know Russians love their vodka, so maybe that's why they have such deep basses.skirtyscot wrote:Whisky doesn't have the same loosening effect on the vocal chords as beer!

I am still old school and enchanted by the sound track of the movie "Dr. Zhivago" !

"YES SKIRTING MATTERS"!
"Kilt-On" -or- as the case may be "Skirt-On" !
WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

Speaking of Dr. Zhivago, the world lost Omar Sharif a week ago, at age 83.r.m.anderson wrote:I am still old school and enchanted by the sound track of the movie "Dr. Zhivago" !

Re: Totally Obsessed with Russian Music
I am into German music. I like Helene Fischer, Heike Schafer and Maria and Margot Hellwig, amongst others. Gradually picking up the language as well. I get fed up with all that one hears on radio and tv here (UK).
Music is music in any language- whether you can understand the words to me is not important, but the tunes are what I like.
Check out Helene Fischers - "Zaubermond" ( Magic Moon ) for a taste. Lots of other German singers on Youtube too.
Andre Rieu is another set of music I listen to.
