Time marches on.
I received sad news today via Sapphire. Edgar Froese, founder of one of my favourite groups of all time, Tangerine Dream has passed on. Thank goodness that he leaves behind a stunning legacy in his recordings; however, a powerful voice stilled still needs mourning.
Go peacefully Edgar, and thanks for the music!

I can recall Tangerine Dream from the mid-seventies, and their music which preceded New Age, and utilized the synthesizer to create spacey long pieces, somewhat in the vein of Brian Eno. It was definitely an esoteric taste.
As a matter of fact, the sun DOES shine out of my ...

I'd not go so far as to say it was "esoteric", but it was -- and remains -- unique. The stuff I like best are their dark brooding pieces; snippets from the movies Sorcerer and The Keep still rank among my favourites. But they also did some absolutely stunning and beautiful pieces such as their astounding interpretation of Handel's Largo. Their work on the soundtrack to Legend still has the power to bring tears to my eyes in places.dillon wrote:[Tangerine Dream] was definitely an esoteric taste.
Such an amazing array of talents, understanding of genres, and styles. So many things to explore and so little time...

I didn't know much of their work, I have White Eagle and one other album, (Is there one called Exit?). I saw them live in 1981 or thereabouts. Always sad to see a musician leave us, it seems to happen more and more often these days.

Yes, there is one called Exit. I saw Tangerine Dream at Boston's Orpheus Theatre in the early '80s during the Underwater Sunlight tour. It was mesmerizing.Big and Bashful wrote:I didn't know much of their work, I have White Eagle and one other album, (Is there one called Exit?). I saw them live in 1981 or thereabouts.
For a nice example of some of the most recent work, see the soundtrack for Grand Theft Auto V*. It opens with a deep brooding undercurrent that is entirely reminiscent of their works from the '70s and '80s, and then goes on. 'Tis good stuff.
At least the ones we know and love. It seems that most of the very best of 'em are dead now.Always sad to see a musician leave us, it seems to happen more and more often these days.
* Drat, that's not it at all -- that's Highland Cathedral! Here's the real deal.
