Well, I don't wear anything special - just the same things I would wear with trousers. I have jumpers over shirts or T-shirts ( or both in REALLY cold weather ), I have body warmers ( sleeveless insulated vest ). For outerwear I have insulated nylon jackets, light jackets and an anorak. Some of these clothes I have had for years ( in the case of one Brutus ( remember them - ".... I pull my Brutus jean on ,,,," was a famous ( in Britain at least ) advert ) denim sleeveless jacket it is older than my children and so hardwearing it's virtually indestructable.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

What is "cold weather"? Minus 30 C (-22F) or something else? This -30C we meet every winter here.

It would be more informative if the posts would have this information, not only "cold", "extreme cold" or something like that. For some of us +15C (+59F) is "cold" and for some other it is "quite warm".

Negative 30 C? Now that's cold!

Generally speaking, when any of us comment on temperatures we're commenting on what's "normal" where we live, and in my own personal case, also what it feels like, which takes relative humidity and wind velocity into account.

Where I live in New England, typical wintertime temperatures hover in the -5C range for lows, so that's "cold". At the same time, it can be -5C and 100% humidity with a 20 knot wind and that's just plain nasty. By the time it gets to -20C it's "really cold", and it does from time to time. I also tend to break those out into temperatures that can get one killed if he's not prepared properly as opposed to simply miserable. Today, it's going to be 0C with 10 knot winds, which is merely unpleasant -- and the temperature for the day has already topped out.

Interestingly, I prefer a right proper cold (-15C) to 0C and 100% humidity. -15 is bracing whereas 0/100% is just miserable. I find that with proper accoutrements, skirts can be worn right down to about -20 very easily. The key is to stay dry.

Our friends in Florida complain about the cold -- and dig out their winter coats -- when the temperature drops much below 20C. Then there are the hardy souls in the upper Midwest here who regard -30 as "football weather" and happily spend time outside in it. Finns, I might imagine, sneer at anything warmer than about -40 (where the scales cross) as "balmy".

With my Utilikilt I wear very thick tights and kilt hose with work boots. On top a long sleeved tee shirt, a cable knit sweater, and a black leather motorcycle jacket (sans the motorcycle). Of course, a stocking cap and leather, fur lined gloves.

Sounds like something to wear in about 0C (32F) temperatures, or a bit warmer, with a little or no wind. Am I right?

Well here, ( Calgary ) we do get -30, and worse! We have already seen windchills close to that already this week.

So far, I just use my regular coats and hats, but I am considering what to wear for more formal events. Partly this is going to depend on how my outfits evolve. I will be digging out an nice long wool overcoat that I found in the thrift shop. ( $30 looks new! ) to see how that looks with various skirts. One thing I do want to get, is a pair of knee high boots. In my size ( 47 Euro, size 13 US, Size 11.5 UK ) I can find some chunkier boots, but the kind of slightly smoother looking, dressier boots that all the women round here are wearing, ( with skirts still, but also with leggings, jeans etc ) are damn hard to find in my size.

Yesterday I shoveled snow in the afore mentioned rig with temps in the upper 20's F. Today it's currently 12F and I opted for thin tights and jeans.

Last night to chorus rehearsal, I wore long underwear and a long fleece skirt... Worked quite well and given the cold temps around here, appropriate...

Thanks for the suggestions. Rick, a short motorcycle jacket would look good. I have a black thick Vanson motorcycle jacket. It feels like a "suit of armor" wearing it. Great body armor for my cycle :). I've tried on ladies cropped jackets. They look good but the arm lengths are too short.
I've considered getting a long woolen coat with attached skirt similar to the one below. It can be made to a mans measurements.
