Kilt versus Skirt

Post by Wim Jansma »

A short question: can anybody tell me what the difference is between a skirt and a kilt. In other words: what makes a kilt a kilt ?
Yes, I know, a silly question. Strangely enough...... But I'm from the continent.....

My dictionary (Webster's Ninth New Collegiate - 1991) defines kilt as
a knee length pleated skirt usu. of tartan.
It gives the etymology as
ME kilten, of Scand. origin; akin to ON kjalta lap, fold of a gathered skirt.
A kilt is a style of skirt, like a cap is a style of hat.
