One good thing about being an old man is that you get to be a crazy old man.
Courage, conviction, nerve, verve, dash, panache, guts, nuts, balls, gall, élan, stones, whatever. Get some and get skirted.

Unfortunately for me I no longer have either parent; they were taken from me and my brothers through natural causes of cancer and heart attack. I am certain that my mother would have approved because she always said that she would have liked to have had a girl and I know that she would have loved to shop for skirts with me. As for my dad, I think he would have just laughed and being the kindly man that he was he wouldn't have said anything to rock the boat.

I have been wearing skirts for a couple of years now and last year I decided to tell my brothers about it. I discussed it with them before showing them. My younger brother's reaction was an 'each to their own attitude' and my eldest was similar to what I expected my dad's to have been. He kind of gave a smiley smirk rolled his eyes and was sort of 'whatever' about it. Their wives have also been approving and haven't been negative about it, not directly to me. Last summer we all spent time together renovating a small bungalow that we're going to sell and every time we went out either to the pub, restaurant, shops, etc, I was skirted. It and they were fantastic.

My immediate family are not quite so liberal and for the moment won't be seen with me skirted in public. My wife has walked the dog with me late at night along roads where we are not known but for my children it's a definite no. I think it's an embarrassment hurdle for them. I intend to buy my first kilt next week and hope that will bring them more on board.

As for going out in public: the message on this forum is, the only real obstacle is yourself and all the perceived negativity is truly your own but watch out because the more you go out in public skirted the more and more you'll want to do it. It's great!! Good luck to you Kieran in your skirted endeavours. Enjoy.

You guys had a better family reaction than I did. My mother told me that because I was thinking about putting a skirt on that my grand father was rolling in his grave. She didn't say this, but she pretty much said men only ware pants. So, before I got sick a year and a half ago I had been wearing long skirts around the house and started with two kilts. Sadly right now till I can get my weight back down I'm not able to ware my kilts and skirts.

I think my Fathers reaction would have been raised eyebrows and "whatever" not accepting as such, but not hostile. My Mother? In her younger years, probably quite hostile, but later on? I think possibly quite accepting after she got over the surprise. Both gone now, so I'll never know. My Brothers and Sisters would probably range from slight scorn with toleration, to firm acceptance. I'm almost certain one of the Sisters in law would declare it "Hot!" and be a pest about it. I'm not sure if I'll ever get much of a chance to tell them. MY GF's family knows, her parents saw me in a skirt last Christmas, and didn't bat an eye. I'm assuming her sister knows, although it would be just like them to let me tell her myself, I'm certain that shey would be accepting, their 3 year old had expressed a desire to have a dress, and they had planned on a shopping trip, but he lost interest. I will have to check with them before I let him see me dressed that way as they may not have a budget for new clothes for him.

Well, if she was happy to buy a dress for her young son, I doubt she'd object to you wearing a skirt. Sounds like someone you should tell about your skirts ASAP!

Get yourself into a skirt and in front of the young lad; maybe he will start asking for a dress again. But be quick - after the age of three gender roles and rules get firmly imprinted on children's brains, so time may he short!

The sun was still out after i got back from work today so i decided to wear my new skirt instead of trousers.
It feels great, i see skirts replacing the shorts i have soon.

Is there any other places that sell mens skirts?
I'm aware of the "The Urban Apparel" and "Midas Clothing", i'm just not having much luck in finding anywhere else.

I find that M&S and BHS usually have several good men's skirts. Trouble is, they hide them away in the women's department where hardly any guys think to look. :D

Read SkirtyScot's text carefully. You've got to "think outside the box" to find those links. (I greatly enjoyed the thrust of that post, too. It put a big smile on my face for several minutes.)

Crassly put, the notion that skirts are only for women is utter idiocy. Skirts are, by far and away, the easiest garments to construct and are quite suited to both sexes -- it's our own minds that get in the way of recognizing that fact by the mere presence of (sometimes overwhelming) cultural convention. However, aside from a miniscule number of designers who specialize specifically in skirts for guys (e.g. Midas) the main way forward is to "cross the aisle" into the gals' section and find skirts that work on your frame and mesh with your own sense of style. It doesn't have to be the latest bit of floral lace-festooned froth; denim "jeans-style" skirts seem to abound in the gals' section and even have flies and fastenings that work the "right way 'round" for guys.

These skirts would be great if they were A-Line or fully pleated
instead of B-line or pencil skirts :(

I agree with Uncle Al - there is NO way I would buy a skirt or dress that would inhibit my normal stride. For that matter I will not go above a 3 1/2 inch heel for that reason. I like to take long steps and not have to mince my steps due to constraints in the skirt or shoes.

I actually got rid of all but one non A-line skirt earlier this month. The sole survivor is a denim skirt that I wear when I'm doing auto repair work (or am visiting the local Pick-n-Pull). Everything else is loose enough to allow me to climb stairs or a fairly steep hill without the hem rising.

Perhaps we should run a free service to each other where if we are too afraid to wear a skirt in the place where we live, we can have someone else wear a skirt in the neighbourhood. We'd all have to return the favour of course.

That way, when someone we know says men don't wear skirts in public, we can point to the skirted man and say, "yes but how about that man over there!!!"

Just a thought!!!
