YOU be the Lion
Who said that? it's not clear on the image.
I'm always drawn to one attributed to Mark Twain -- who did vastly more than humour: "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear."
The absence of fear makes one cocky and causes one to make mistakes. Fear is the check that holds things in balance and makes one think before doing something. Fear is a useful element, but deferring to it full-time guarantees that nothing will ever get done. This is where
mastery of fear comes into play, for it makes it possible for us to do brave things where others behave like sheep.
What I'm trying to say is that risk can be managed, and it can be managed in a way that minimizes fear whilst still allowing one to perform things that are otherwise "outside the box". For instance, I would not attend a KKK meeting whilst dressed in a skirt (or, actually, any other time either but that's beside the point). However, I am also a bit of a regular at a rather "down-market" bar in a town a bit to the north of where I live, and I do not believe they've ever seen me in trousers -- and I have not had one lick of trouble, ever, no matter what skirt I had on.
Generally speaking, from my experience, most folks, one-to-one, have reasonably open minds about things and tend to be fairly accepting of others. This is not to say that
all are; I've dealt with my fair share of bigots and intolerant bastards over the years -- but those have been the exception rather than the rule, and sometimes you find the most acceptance in places you might not expect it. Take a look at ChrisM and his experiences with the US Navy.
Ultimately, I think that except in very unusual situations wearing a skirt will not cause a ruckus, a hullabaloo, or even a donnybrook -- more likely a few second glances and, for those brave folk who exert mastery of fear to ask the bloke in a skirt, "Why?" which could result in enlightenment.
To crib RM's line: "Skirt on!"
