I've seen similar done before, but which also used scanner components to get some of the high-frequency bits as well. Floppies really only do well for the bass lines.
Of course the disk drives I got my start on would have been the equivalent of 128' organ pipes -- infrasonic at best, but capable of a pretty good "whump" for a bass-drum for a fast stop after a long seek (these were also the sort of drives that if you raised the fixed feet on them you could walk them across a floor using creative seek patterns).
