The only sensible thing to do, Bob, is to go out, buy a new better thermometer which has gradations down to Absolute Zero ( Minus 273 deg. Centurion) and send the bill to your congressman/woman!

LOL, your end of the state is a helluva lot better in summer! I don't know which I like less; freezing my nads off in winter, or sweltering in 85% humidity all summer in a region where we may go a couple months without a low temperature under 78F! As much as I love the mountains, I think I would miss the Sounds.

I saw something about the Polar Vortex on the BBC a few days ago.

We in the UK had something similar a few years ago for two successive winters where the gulf stream veared southwards and funnelled cold air from the Arctic across the country. Temperatures than were down to -17deg C - a bit warmer than the current US situation. (I did have on my kilt during those winters and didn't feel the cold too much)
