Half Slips
Re: Half Slips
I have seen them with splits in the sides to accommodate a longer stride, presumably. So I suppose that you could do the same and "ease" the stitching on the side seams. The length of the split would be determined to suit you. Funnily enough I am wearing a very short white cotton skirt which I am using as a slip under a longer purple skirt. Stops the static cling of the skirt to my tights.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

Re: Half Slips
That's another function of the humble slip -- one of friction control. As ChrisM is fond of saying, the slip is part of an engineered system in very much the same way that a washer is part of the engineered system of bolts and nuts. Slips serve multiple functions, of which control of transmissivity, friction control, helping keep the outer garment clean, and isolation from rough fabrics are but four of which that immediately spring to mind.Sinned wrote:Funnily enough I am wearing a very short white cotton skirt which I am using as a slip under a longer purple skirt. They're available with slits or not, and if the occasional bit of lace at the hem offends your personal sensibilities then by all means cut it off. They're really very useful things.

Re: Half Slips
I have noticed over the years that many young girls fail to use the slip. I see that as the skirt clings to them and they have to pull the skirt outward to separate it from them. Modern materials contain a lot of synthetics which generate static due to the friction and rubbing which causes the cling. The slip, being either nylon or cotton, holds the static and insulates the outer skirt from it so the slip clings in preference. I think that as their mothers wear skirts less these lessons don't get passed down to their daughters. Even I knew the purpose of slips long before I even thought about wearing skirts. So as crfrnd has indicated the girls wear the skirt but see the disadvantages and this discourages them. I, along with you all, see the advantages and if we see one of the problems then we seek a solution and it's invariably one that to our foremothers was second nature AND HAD BEEN PASSED TO THEM BY THEIR MOTHERS.

Re: Half Slips
What there seems to be a shortage of are half slips for the shorter skirts. Most slips are designed to be knee length but I know that they used to make slips that were mid-thigh length to cater for mini skirts. I need to do a little searching around.

Re: Half Slips
I haven't seen anything like that since the late '70s when a then-girlfriend had a slip that was specially-designed for miniskirts and even had a pair of built-in matching knickers. (Even at this temporal range the thought brings a bit of a joy to this dirty old mind.)Sinned wrote:[...]I know that they used to make slips that were mid-thigh length to cater for mini skirts. Re: Half Slips
Amazon have 18" ones from £4.99 upwards. Then apart from more expensive ones there's Matalan at £4.00 but these are longer at 23". I suppose that a longer one can be shortened and that may have to be the road that I may have to go down. I do find that frilly bit at the bottom a bit iterating as to me it marks them out as feminine but that just may be my perception because they've always been associated with women and always been like that. But I don't know what I would put in place of the frill that would mark them as masculine. Any suggestions or am I concerned about nothing?
I know MOH ( see the "Out and About -- In the World at Large" thread ) has a few slips ( full, half and mini ) that she doesn't wear anymore and hasn't for some years but I don't want to just come out and ask for them ( maybe more accusations about wanting to dress like a woman, or maybe not - who knows how a woman thinks? ) so I'll be a bit devious and get her to offer to get them for me - I've done this sort of thing before as she has probably done to me. I don't know where in her warehouse store of clothes she has them hidden otherwise I would have a rummage.

Re: Half Slips
M&S do "waist slips" (see here). The sizes are dress size followed by length in inches. If these are still sized as they were when I bought mine, that is the length of the skirt they are designed to be worn with rather than their actual length. Hence my 16" is actually around 14" long. If you need shorter than that...Sinned wrote:What there seems to be a shortage of are half slips for the shorter skirts. Re: Half Slips
I have looked at this and it just appears to be an ordinary slip, the length isn't given but one of the reviews mentions 26" and the picture shows the length as just above the knee. Rather pricey also since Matalan do one for a quarter of the price. I was actually looking for something just a couple of inches shorter but not up my b*m.Sinned wrote:What there seems to be a shortage of are half slips for the shorter skirts. Re: Half Slips
Try typing "cool comfort slip" in ebay. Lots of different sizes and lengths to choose from. When I bought mine, they were perfectly plain but they now seem to have a small lace edge.

Yes, they are just standard hang-from-the-waist slips; is that not what you want? As for length, I have already noted that they are sized by dress size followed by length (Choose a colour then choose your size). Lengths available are 16", 19", 23", or 26" so you can go a little shorter than the 26" one reviewer chose. You suggested Matalan, but they only do half slips in knee length.
I have previously mentioned that one of my slips came from BHS. They still list this one, more expensive than Matalan, but shorter, so maybe better suited to your needs? (BHS list other lengths too).
In the end you pays your money and makes your choices...

Re: Half Slips
Thanks, 18" or 20" is about the length that I was looking for and the price is right too at £5.00. Must get along to my local M&S soon. A black one and a white one would do fine. I will also try the cool comfort slip suggestion also. That's one thing that is so good about this forum - there's always someone who has the answer.

Re: Half Slips
I've had a spadeful of surprises lately, and this one just about top's the lot.
For context, see the red cargo skirt, I posted on pics and looks. I wore that one at work on Friday, 31st October.
Today, I received a gift, a white satin half slip. This from a female colleague, not a close personal friend. I'd have put her in the tolerant from a distance category.
First, she was at pains to ensure I wasn't offended. She'd asked if wore "underskirts", answer no, as most skirts I wear are lined.
She mentioned the red one, and that's plain cotton ,no lining. She'd noticed it didn't sit "right" and presented me with the slip to make it work better.
I was truly touched, and promised to give it a try, that will certainly be a first of firsts.
In case anyone gets the wrong "idea", there is no ulterior motive at work here.
Steve.

Stevie,
That's pretty amazing, and a lovely touch. It's also brave of your colleague, but with what appears to be the right reasoning - support in what you are seeking to do. I'm stunned. It's great news.
