My wife and I took a quick trip to Yellowstone National Park for some hiking (we were just leaving when the park became shrouded in haze from the forest fires). I brought with me my new Geoffrey utility kilt, and my UTKilts utility kilt. We hiked an easy trail on our first day in the park, and spent a lot of time in high traffic areas. I got a lot of stares from people, and more than one sustained stare (which I met with a smile and steady gaze). On that day I was also wearing my toed shoes, which look unusual if you've never seen them before. I wondered if I caused folks overload because I was wearing my fedora (which often gets comments), my kilt, and my strange shoes.

The next day, we hiked in the back country and passed only a handful of people. Everyone of the people we passed greeted us as fellow back country hikers and never gave the kilt a glance. I wonder if it seemed to fit in to the environment of hiking better. After we finished our hike, we went to get something to eat. In the diner, I passed a family with a preschool boy who asked his moth what it was that I was wearing. His mother explained that it was called a kilt; it comes from Scotland; and some people wear it because they feel that it is more comfortable.

Or third day we stayed on the boardwalks and geyser gazed. There were no stares or comments on that day, but I did have a good conversation with a guy who sported a good set of dreadlocks. He was very interested in my UTK kilt. He said that he had some sarongs, but had never tried anything else. I sung their praises for comfort and practicality, and suggested some places where could purchase some. He parted ways with a happy, "Dig it!"

We had a good quick Yellowstone trip. And I got to wear my kilts out and about.

Easy trails tend to be crowded with unsophistocated litterbug vacationers in plaid shorts (or whatever).

Further in, where it takes some work and experience to reach, the hikers are more sophistocated and responsible. If you make it in that far and seem to know what you've doing, you're part of the club and whatever equipment and clothing you choose are OK.

I've never gotten a negative look or comment while hiking in a kilt.
