First time?

Post by fasteddie »

What was it like going out your first time wearing a skirt? What did people say/do? How did you get up the courage to do it? What did your wife/S.O. have to say about it? How nervous were you?

For me the first time was wearing a short 14" stretch denim mini-skirt, bare legs and a T-shirt. I was at a Motorway service station to get petrol and had changed into the skirt in the car before I arrived there. All I had to do was fill up at the pump then walk over to and pay at the shop. In other words a short brief try-out to test the water. And the specific replies to your questions:-

What was it like going out your first time wearing a skirt? Quite exciting really and nerve wracking. For me, thoughts of will I go through with this or not ran through my brain or what will I do if anyone says anything? Certainly my heart raced a bit faster abd there was the slight feeling of a rabbit caught in headlights.

What did people say/do? I recall one woman coming out of the shop did a double-take but said nothing  - and that was it!! . There were two pilicemen standing at the till where they had just bought some coffee and even though they were both facing in my direction, neither blinked en eye. 8)

How did you get up the courage to do it? Because I already had on the skirt, I could either drive off without filling up or going through with it. Glad I did the latter! :D

What did your wife/S.O. have to say about it? My wife didn't know at the time but when she did find out I had been wearing skirts, things got very bad - nuff said. :( :eye:

How nervous were you? Very! But after that first time, and the virtual absence of any reaction from Joe Public, it was almost a disappointment. The next time was a lot easier. I returned to the same point later that day going home and deliberately bought a coffee and biscuit from the services on the other side of the motorway. Then I don't recall seeing any reaction at all :D 8)

Zero reaction. First, it was sarongs on holiday. Nobody cared.

Then it was a plain, knee-length denim - still no reaction.

If you keep the overall look very masculine, hardly anyone notices and those who do notice do a very brief double-take and then just go about their business.

I wore a black utility kilt to a tattoo convention. I was a little apprehensive but tattoo conventions are pretty counter-cultural sorts of places. I was also wearing a black tank top lettered POLICE.

Some people were surprised, no one was negative, and I got a number of high-fives and compliments.

Also took 1st place in the back piece competition.
fasteddie wrote:How did you get up the courage to do it?
I figured that the kilt was no more counter-cultural than the earrings and tattoos I already had.

Not at all amused, possibly threatened as to what people would think of her, but (fortunately) tolerant.

She didn't come along BTW, which she usually doesn't for tattoo shows anyway. And she still won't be seen with me kilted in public. She does tolerate a kilt around the house, though, or when I'm out alone, even if people she knows are going to see me.

Some but not overpowering.

I often explain tattoo conventions as a bunch of crazy people walking around and looking at all the other crazy people. You see it all, including goth, corsets, women with shaved heads, piercings, henna, tattoos , pink, green, or blue hair, and on and on. So I knew I'd be just one more crazy person thrown in for good measure.

Comic-cons and Renaissance Faires seem to have a similar outlook. And Celtic festivals, of course, present no issues with kilts. And you may be more comfortable trying a skirt or kilt somewhere where you won't be recognized -- a shopping mall an hour's drive away, for example.

And believe me, it's a MUCH bigger deal, for you than for anyone else. I think you'll be amazed how little people care what you wear. They've all been fashion-shocked into numbness a long time ago.

So go for it!

Not a skirt but a kilt with all the trimming.
My neighbour – WoW don't you look good.
At church – can you give us a twirl.
Also at church – can you play the bag pipe.
After that I was hooked, the skirts came later

First time in public, for me, was about 14 years ago, and that was in a sarong. I have to admit that I was, if not scared, extremely nervous. I did have a supportive S.O. I had been skirted privately for about a previous 14 to 15 years. My next fear encounter was probably about 10 years ago when I stepped out in an ankle length Gap cargo skirt. Reaction was almost nil except for the killing look from some Brethren women who were in similar skirts :P

My first time was when my friend, who knew about my interest in mens skirts, saw a rack full of jeans skirts in Arnhem (Holland) and suggested I could try one on.
The woman inside the store was flabbergasted when I asked what size would fit me but minutes later I looked at myself in the mirror in a skirt!
It felt very comfortable and my friend said I looked great. The shopkeeper removed the tags, I checked out and there I was, walking down town in my first skirt.
I had to endure lots of comment, laughing and so on but I didn't care much. We're talking 1973!!
I have to admit I was very nervous but it really felt great to wear a skirt. And it still does.

My first time out was in the pre-Christmas period and I had some shopping to do at an out-of-town centre. I wore an above knee length denim skirt and it was evening. There was very little reaction although the girl behind the till in W H Smiths ( a bookstore ) did smile. I visited several shops and was out a couple of hours - there was no other reaction from the other shoppers. I was nervous, yes, but tried to appear confident. I didn't think about working up courage - I just wanted to find out for myself - didn't think that there would be any trouble in a shopping centre full of people mooching and wondering about what presents to get. MOH doesn't know as she doesn't approve. Nearly could have been a disaster as I left the car key in the boot lock for about twenty minutes - went back to the car and the key was still there - the remote parking position and the dark night worked in my favour. If someone had stolen the car and left me stranded then MOH would have found out and would I have been in trouble. It was a successful test that either people didn't notice or didn't care. I have repeated the "experiment" since with similar results.

I generally wear a kilt when I'm out in public but I have tried a skirt a few times. The first time I went hiking in a popular wooded area near my home. I passed several people and saw no reactions to the 18 inch denim I was wearing. I passed one couple where the guy was taking photos of his girlfriend. After I passed them I looked back and he taking a photo of me. After I left the park I stopped for gas, went inside to pay then stopped at the grocery to pick up a few things and had to problems at either place.
I've been outdoors at home in skirts and have stopped to chat with neighbors. They're all used to seeing me in a kilt so maybe they didn't notice I was in a skirt. If they did they didn't say anything.

I was very nervous, though of course there was no need to be!

The absolute first time was late walk across a park near my GF's place, with her. Not sure we were actually seen. I wanted to see what it felt like, how cold it would be.
fasteddie wrote:What did people say/do?
The first time I went out, in "public" for the first time, I took a letter across the courtyard to deliver for my GF. I met a girl coming the other way, smiled at each other "Evening" got a smile, but she waited holding the door for me when I came back, no comments, but big grin, she clearly wanted a seciond look
fasteddie wrote:How did you get up the courage to do it?
I wasn't 'known" around there, so that made it easier somehow.
fasteddie wrote:What did your wife/S.O. have to say about it?
Not a lot, she is approving generally, and wouldn't presume to try and dictate what I wear. She has told me that some things don't "work" for color or fit reasons, but the worst she would ever do is say "You can wear that if you want, but not with me"
fasteddie wrote:How nervous were you?
A fair bit, have been out since, and had visitors in while in a skirt, still nervous/anxious, but it's getting easier. I know, the world is not going to end, and the worst is probably going to be some ribald comments, my skin is getting thicker in that regard.

It could have been my first time tonight. I'd ordered a size 18 black Dorothy Perkins cargo skirt for £4 from eBay. Got home opened the parcel and to my disappointment it was a mini, a detail which hadn't been mentioned in the listing. I would feel a bit too self conscious wearing something that short especially with it being my first time.

This is actually the second skirt I've bought. The first was a similar but longer size 16 black Dorothy Perkins, also from eBay, but that was too tight around the waist so I never wore it then my ex cut it with scissors recently when we split up.

I was really exited and a tad nervous coming home from work tonight I couldn't wait to go out in it. I'm living back with mum and dad again until I get my own place sorted and they know about the other skirt and are fine about me wearing tights. I had been planning on taking a walk to the local takeaway and back until I saw the size of it.

Time to get searching eBay for more cargo skirts again.
I don't find the idea of men wearing skirts, tights or dresses whilst presenting as male degrading. What I find most degrading is society dictating that men should only dress in a certain way, whilst affording the opp sex an unrestricted freedom of choice

Don't overlook thrift shops. They're a great way to get started, you can measure them or try them on before buying, and they're cheap enough to try various styles without much expense.

Slhtt lgs,

I have bought a lot of skirts from ebay and I ALWAYS message the seller to ask for skirt measurements - mainly waist and length but possibly hem as well. That way I can be sure it's what I want as photographs don't always tell the whole story. I wear a female size 14 or 16 or Large but as has already been mentioned female sizes are a black art. So don't give up and if visiting thrift shops take a tape measure with you and know your measurements. BTW a short skirt shouldn't be dismissed as most of my skirts are above the knee.

S Legs - My firt time (apart from a kilt) was a mini (see above). I wear a ladies size 12 though so perhaps as with slimmer women, they look better with shorter skirts? Certainly on a charity walk a couple of years ago, I wore it and got lots of positive feedback ""Wow! Man in a skirt! Cool!" was the best one I can tell you. But there were many other thumbs up from other walkers and assistants. I did the same walk the following year and got a jealous comment, "You've got better legs than me in a skirt!"
