Where to buy skirts?

Post by Demostenes »

Hi, I'm new here. I've been thinking about wearing skirts for a while now but my first obstacle is I don't know where to buy them. I don't want to wear women's skirts (I don't think I would look good on them), and I'm not interested in kilts. I am interested in fashionable men's skirts. I've been looking over the internet but can't find much. The few I found are very very expensive (like those sold at luisaviorama http://www.luisaviaroma.com/FullTextSea ... gender=men).
Just to show an example, I like this style: http://lookbook.nu/look/3276767-Number- ... Homme-Wool
I'm certainly not shy of wearing more colorful and "feminine" clothing, but something that is aimed for men would be nice. Let me know if you know where I can find some kind of fashionable skirts for men. Thanks!

Hi & :welcome:
If your looking for men's skirts your quest is going to be a long one or as you found out an expensive one, bite the bullet and just buy a skirt or what about this and yes I know it is a kilt

Welcome to the Café.

You might get a better (or at least more relevant) response to the question "where to buy skirts" if you gave us a clue as to your location. From the timestamp on your post I am guessing you are east of the Atlantic but you may just be an insomniac...

Mens skirts are rare, very rare. However none of the skirts you pictured could not be bought in the High Street, they will simply reside on the opposite side of the store. I regularly wear skirts that were made on the assumption that they would be sold to a woman, however, I bought them so now they are a mans skirt. Conversely, Utilikilts are certainly a man skirt and market as such but that has not stopped people referring to them as my skirt.

In the end it all comes down to you. If you are happy wearing something, people will generally accept it. If you are short of confidence and rely on the "it was made for a man" defence / justification I feel pretty certain that folks will pick up on your fears and you will get far more flack for it than otherwise.

As for where to buy; mine have come from a variety of stores:
New Look,
Primark,
Matelan,
House of Fraser,
Svenjoyment,
Union Kilts,
My Tartan Shop (via Ebay),
Utilikilts.com
Wallis,
JDez,
Fat Face
and assorted charity shops.

Anywhere that sells skirts will take your money and then it will be a mans skirt.

Have fun,

Ian.

Hi and welcome,

Virtually all affordable skirts ( and a lot of unaffordable ones ) are made on the assumption that a woman will be wearing them. Some, like tulip skirts are designed for the narrower waist and broader hips of a woman. But others, such as A line skirts can be worn by either sex because they just flare outwards from the waistband. To me, every skirt should stand or fall on its own merits. I like to think that none of the skirts I have bought ( ASDA, ebay, peacocks etc ) could be classed as overtly feminine. As has already been said if a skirt is being worn by a man then it is a man's skirt. There are a range of opinions about how much a skirt should cost - I range at the cheaper end but others have paid over £100 - browse through previous postings. More important than what others think is what those closest to you think. I have fallen into the ".... it's all right for men to wear skirts as long as it isn't my husband ...." camp so I am going through a traumatic time at the moment.

Hope you have better luck.

All but one of my skirts have come from thrift shops. I find it easier to buy there, as the rows of garments are usually closer together, people are much more focused on hunting up a bargain, and it's quite common to see people with a tape maeasure because of the mixed brands and random size labelling.

And you can't beat the cost!

If, like me, you are experimenting with whats looks good, and provides the function one is looking for, a few failed purchases are to be expected. This is a lot easier to bear when the item costs $2, not $20-$40!

I am becoming a regular at the thrift stores near me, and I'm fairly certain some of the staff have figured out I'm buying for myself. I have used the changing rooms to try on, and nobody has said a word. Even in the ones which are run by religious organizations. These days I go with a tape measure, as I've figured out the waist measurement range that works for me, a smaller waist can be worn high, a larger one closer to the hip, or even slightly below the hip arch. ( careful with that, depending on how you're built, can lead to the skirt falling off! )

I have several skirts which are either made for men or unisex. I have 3 Macabis, they are marketed at both sexes, they are long,, quite light and roomy, with enormous pockets and a variety of clips and studs to keep them out of the way when you need. I find them great for sailing as they are made from a quick drying fabric.
I also have 5 skirts from Midas Clothing, made for men, to order and they are happy to customise the skirt if required, i.e. different lengths. The awkward bit seems to be getting in touch with them.
As Milfmog mentioned, Ebay often has skirts from Svenjoyment for men. There is a long skirt, which didn't go large enough in the waist for me, and a knee length skirt which I have, I like it but haven't worn it out, it is black and in my house, the cat population features white fur, which gets onto everything. So that skirt is just living out of the way until I find the right occasion to give it a proper test drive.
Midas are British, based in Manchester, Macabis are from the U of SA and the Svenjoyment skirt, I can't remember, somewhere in Ebay land.

Thank you so much!
I actually really like that first kilt, and the other two stores have a few nice ones too! I guess I have to start saving, thanks for the info. I would have not found it by myself. This is a great forum!

Oh yeah, I'm sorry I forgot to mention. I live in the United States. I'm not concerned about justifying I'm using male skirts as much as how I would look on them. For example, I think I wouldn't look good on short skirts, unless some tights or pants are under it. But now that you mention it, I think I'll try a "woman's skirt" just to see what happens, I may like it! I've always had a fancy for the skirts on forever21. Thanks for the long list of stores! I hope they do online shopping. I'll keep looking and let you guys know how my adventure went. Thanks again!

Those look like great sites! I like urbanapparel. You're certainly rocking that skirt. It will take me some time to save enough as to afford these skirts, but it is my goal now. Thanks!

You are right, those close to me are the ones that matter. I've only "confessed" my intentions to my roommate and a few friends. They like the idea, I hope my family takes it well too, I'll surprise them once I get my first skirt.

I hadn't thought of this, but I think I'll do that! It will allow me to experiment with different designs at a low cost. Thanks so much!

Wow, I like Macabi, thanks for the tip!

I liked the look of the Brighton Alternative Utility kilt and have ordered one. I will let you know what it is like when it arrives. (Hopefully) a good call Richard!

Check out the offerings from Mountain Hardwear and LL Bean; there are some fairly non-feminine women's skirts, and MH offers the Elkommando men's kilt. These are the ones I wear the most.
When I heard about skirting, I jumped in with both feet!
