A decent article on men's skirts in Fiji and the usual manner of wearing them.

I have, for some time now, wished to go to Fiji and buy a sulu vaka taga or more for formal wear. I don't have much excuse for not going, as it's only a short plane trip (probably just over an hour) from here. Admiral Frank (Bananas in pyjamas) is a dictator, but maybe better a skirted one than a middle eastern one. :alien: :P

If you read all the way to the bottom of the article linked to by Sarongman you will see this sub-head:

That story is from August 2009, and it is some kind of religious edict...

"The Methodist Church on Bua island has ruled that men must wear the traditional island sarong, called a sulu, on Sundays to learn to respect the significance of the holy day"

If some small 'kirk' in Scotland made a similar ruling about the kilt I wonder what kind of reaction they would get!

I'd like to think that they would get told to take a hike and keep stupid, pointless and petty rules to themselves. I detest unnecessary compulsion of any sort.

Have fun and don't let some tin pot dictator spoil it for you.
