Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Wearing a Skirt in public ?
I like wearing short skirts and support pantyhose.
The reason for the pantyhose,is because of legs swelling,
and cramping, the hose helps with this problem.I find
wearing a short skirt is much more comfortable, and
cooler than shorts. I wear shorts and hose, and I go
wear ever I want to go, and I don't care what people
think. I have been wearing skirts and hose around the
house and yard, some people have seen me wearing a skirt.
Last week I got the courage up, to go out in public wearing
a skirt, I went to Walgreen's to pickup my prescription at
the drive in window, no I did not go in to the store.
I wanted to but chicken out, but I did take my first step
in wearing my skirt away from the house. But on my way home,
I was getting very low ON GAS,so I had to stop and get gas.
Now I had to get out of my truck to pump the gas.my truck
sets up high, when I got out my skirt started to ride up.
Their were a few people that looked, but no one said anything.
Now I been thinking of trying to go grocery shopping, wearing
a skirt my second step, but I can not squat down because of
leg troubles so I would have to bend over if I had to pick
anything up,and skirt will probably ride up and give someone a
free show. I want to reach my second step of wearing my skirt
in public but something keeps holding me back.I know if we want
to ever get men wearing skirts and be excepted by the public,we
have got to be seen wearing our skirts.what is your opinion on
this subject. Johnny

we all had to start somewhere so well done on your first steps, the more you wear a skirt the more comfortable you will be in public

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Perhaps you will have to accept your limitation, and wear a longer skirt? My wife also cannot bend at the knees, so wears mid-calf or longer skirts.jpf85653 wrote:

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
From your picture it appears that you have a rather short skirt. My skirts come down to 5 cm (2 inches) above the knees. At that longer length I have no problems bending down.
The only time I wear anything except skirts is when I go to church or a job interview, or if the weather is cool. I see that most people don't notice the skirt for the most part since it is the same length and material as shorts.

Johnny,
If you are going to be out and about and need to bend down or climb in and out of high vehicles you will need to consider your modesty to avoid being seen as an undesireable. If your current hemline is too short to allow you to maintain some dignity I'd strongly suggest that you need to consider lower hemlines.
I appreciate that you like short skirts, I also enjoy a miniskirt when the circumstances permit. However I can realise similar levels of comfort in ankle length skirts if I select light fabrics and full styles. For example my Mababi skirt (there is a picture in my pics and looks thread) is as light and airy as a miniskirt and almost as easy to wear (there is more fabric to manage of course), but will not accidentally show off next weeks laundry. Longer full skirts do draw a little more attention than skirts that can be mistaken for a pair of shorts, but no one has ever given me any grief over my choices and I feel happier knowing that my motivation will not be misunderstood as a result of my accidentally "showing off".
Have fun,
Ian.

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Congratulations jpf on taking that important "first step". I was nervous the first time I wore a skirt in public too. I started with a medium length skirt, but have gradually progressed to shorter and shorter skirts which I like the best. It is true that the greatest barrier is your own attitude; I am continually amazed at how few people even notice, let alone bother to react or comment; even when I wear very very short skirts and often forget to watch how I sit and stand. Most people are way too busy with their own lives to care what you wear.

That good for you - Ive done myself as well - 1st I went for petrol (quite busy) and I was wearing black tights with dark grey cord mini skirt with my own white t-shirt and black suede gladiator sandal and waiting at the queue as people already noticed and didnt say anything and then i paid cash for petrol as the cash lady smile and wee chat - dont mind what Im wearing and then next day went to my bank to put my money into account as cash lady seem quite normal... people dont care what Im wearing that a good start. It nice and feel so soft and so light plus nice with airflow through the body.
Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Congratulation! I nearly chickened out the first time... But took the plunge anyway. I did not want to wait another day. The fact you have to go against your brain that was brain washed since birth that skirts are for women. Once you unlearn that it becomes quite easy and the skirt is just another piece of clothing or option you have when you dress. The shorter, the more careful you have to be. For me 4 inches above the knee is the max I go for. Like somebody else say, make sure you know how to seat properly by pulling the skirt under your thighs (watch a woman doing it), kneel when you need to pick up something low or on the ground, do not bend, Watch when you get out of the car especially on windy days. When you are in public do not make wearing a skirt a big deal... It is as if you were wearing pants or shorts..... Cheers

That is absolutely the best advice. If you are wearing straight denim, corduroy or canvas, somewhere around knee length, and you just forget about it - hardly anyone will notice and those who do won't give a stuff. Guys who wear skirts like this sometimes seem to expect some kind of reaction - well, you ain't going to get one - it will be a non-event.

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Actually, the same thing happens if you are wearing an ankle-length green taffeta skirt with a ruffle, at least where I hang out (USA Northeast.) The most you will get is some people taking a second look, I assume to assure themselves that they saw what they thought they saw.Stu wrote:...If you are wearing straight denim, corduroy or canvas, somewhere around knee length, and you just forget about it - hardly anyone will notice and those who do won't give a stuff...
If your face, your body language, and your behavior say you're just an ordinary Joe going about your business, almost everyone will take you at your (non-verbal) word. Once they've figured out that you're not going to do something crazy, they just want to get about their lives. They definitely don't want to hear the whole megillah about why you're wearing a skirt.
Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
I had a simular experience while driving home from shopping at a cd friendly boutique in Maine...while shopping I found a leather skirt, It fit well and the women that owns the shop said it fit well and said I should wear it home, which was about a little over and hour away. I left the shop dressed in that skirt and noticed about half way home I wouldn't make it without stopping for gas. I decided I would stop some where not so close to home...I pulled up and started to fill up and was noticed by several people both male and female, nobody made any commits but did get a smile or two. I have now been out for gas and other places dressed in skirts and it is getting easier and easier going out in a skirt.

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
About half a year ago, I used to ride the bus to work and there was one guy who often wore a skirt - plaid, apparently alluding to punk style - he also had a spiked leather collar and military boots, but it was not a kilt and not punkish at all, perfectly suited for a non-punk woman. Looked nice though, and it was not a bet, I saw him quite often, for weeks. Well, that were my thoughts. People like to find a drawer for anything unusual they see, they categorise it and then forget it. I didn't, simply because I am a private skirtsman.
Well, I am not sure, if this will help you. I am at the same stage as you, wanting to wear skirts in public but I chicken out most of the time. I think, it takes patience and persistance. Experience should tell us, that we can do it.

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
This IMHO is the key to male skirt wearing. Its not about the clothes. Its about how you present yourself to the world.AMM wrote:If your face, your body language, and your behavior say you're just an ordinary Joe going about your business, almost everyone will take you at your (non-verbal) word.
Radiate confidence and ease and you can wear whatever you want (but I'd recommend conservative to begin until it all comes naturally).
And remember - its not illegal or immoral or indecent to wear a skirt in public. Go for it, laddie!!

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Just came back from the convenience store to grab some beer and smokes wearing a denim mini and a nice blue (junior size) v-neck t-shirt. No problem. I this store for years and they know me. I'm 54 and am very comfortable in my skin. Being a nudist most my life wearing a mini is a no brainer.
So guys JUST DO IT! It's mostly all in your mind. Confidence is KEY!

Re: Wearing a Skirt in public ?
Yes, very well done for the public skirt wearing. The more we get out and get seen, the more acceptable it becomes. I hope!
I have not been out in public much of late. I have had a new house keeper in, a private medical insurance advisor and a roofing contractor doing a quote. All when I was wearing my skirt.
Keep us informed of progress.
