I'm off for a week's holiday in the morning, with the wife and children. I've packed 3 skirts and 3 pairs of trousers, and I will wear a skirt for the drive. So I'll have more skirts than trousers with me (though I will doubtless be browbeaten into wearing trousers when we are out together). Same thing on our summer hols in France last year. Does anyone else (apart from those fortunate guys whose nearest and dearest approve of their skirts) manage this?

7 items for 7 days seems at bit more than is really necessary. But of course if the family were more reasonable, I could cut down the number of trousers. Travelling light is not easy these days!

First off, enjoy your holiday!

How many pair of trousers would you normally pack for a week away from home? That's a bellweather there.

Back in my slightly more slovenly days, I'd pack -- maybe -- two pairs of trousers for a week, and much more likely only one. What I would pack, though, would be a clean shirt for every day (unless washing them in the hotel sink and letting them dry on the shower-rod was an option), and clean socks and undies for each day planned plus two (for contingencies).

Skirts should need to be washed less often than trousers as they're not so much in close contact with skin, but there are also the other things that go with skirts that take up space in one's baggage. (I am astounded how much space tights take up, at least heavy ones, and those need to be treated as undies.)

In any event, if there is heavy friction regarding skirts, I might be tempted to pack only one, or possibly two, favourites and be done with. Sometimes causing marital grief just isn't worth it if the whole undertaking is designed to be pleasurable, fun, or a stress-reliever.

It'd be interesting to take a plane and be out of town for several days (at least) without bringing any pants or skirts. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how that would come about. I do have a trip coming up in May, but it's a business conference, and I'll be in view of customers pretty much the whole time. And while I can play games with my own image, playing games with the company's image is probably taboo.

There are a couple of weekends this summer when I might drive out Saturday, hike, stay overnight, attend a tattoo show (in one case) or a Celtic festival (in the other), and then drive home on Sunday. So those trips could easily become 100% kilted.

My plan is to take along my three kilts (1 plaid, 1 solid black, & 1 utilikilt), a pair of pants for more formal, and a pair of shorts (and, of course the other items to be fully clothed). What I can't decide what to do right now is what to wear on the train (we are going out to AZ by Amtrac). Do I want to wear my kilt on the train? Haven't yet decided...

Generally agreed, but I see no reason why only one party gets stress relief. Didn't you post something a while back about Sapphire's school reunion where she commented that of course you would be skirted because otherwise you would be miserable?

She was telling that to her classmates, and there was a sense of expectation. If I'd had a "crisis of confidence" or was generally miserable and wnted to blend into the woodwork, trousers were always an option and she knew it.

Yes, you do want to wear a kilt on the train! The question should be, which one. I wore a different skirt each day on a 3-day cross-county Amtrak trip (reported on another thread). It's a good place to be visible to lots of people (for example the lounge car), and possibly get into a conversation about the kilt or skirt, and perhaps enlighten one or more people. Wear what you're happy to be in, and be happy!

I can't speak for Sinned / Mrs Sinned, but in the Milfmog household formal occasions are dress up occasions and Carole appears to regard a well cut suit on a man as a good accessory to go with any of her dress up outfits. A well dressed man in a skirt might garner more attention than her outfit and I doubt whether that would be appreciated. I have, however, gained approval (in principle) for a combination of a long black skirt with a red silk shirt and a black and gold cravatte for our 25th wedding anniversary dinner. Time will tell whether that approval evaporates on the day.

The more formal occasions I was thinking of were mealtimes. I have skirts that go well in a formal situation but generally with a jacket and I didn't want to take a jacket. But you are right, I suppose that even mealtimes could be skirted as well. A whole holiday skirted - that would be beyond my expectations. Wonder how MOH would react?

I've returned from my vacation with my solid black kilt and utility kilt. Because the first week was taken up with. Dealing with a deceased relative's estate, I didn't have the chance to wear one of the kilts until the second week when we were visiting with our daughter and son-in-law who live in Payson. As it turned out I only wore the utility kilt outside. I received a lot of positive comments from different people (and the state park employee told me he wished he could wear a kilt on the job). I noticed that an older lady scowled as she walked passed me. I can't be sure if the scowl was meant for me or not, though (she was wearing a skirt, so maybe she wanted the comfort of wearing an unbifurcated garment all to herself). I think one person may have taken my picture with an iPhone, but I can't be sure if she was taking a picture (and if so, of me or something else), or if she was just holding her phone up while texting. Who knows, maybe I'm on YouTube by now! I decided to not wear my kilts on the train as one needs to sit and sleep in a number of different positions to remain comfortable, some of which would be too revealing. Interestingly, the only skirts I saw were ankle length skirts worn by the Amish women, and by an elderly Native woman. The train isn't the place for a short skirt, apparently.
