Tights are things that I wear when it's perishing cold outside. I have a few thick pairs, the best of which are 'woven' and afford real warmth. All these need holding up with grippy undies which I can tolerate. During cold frosty weather I wear them under my work trousers. Thin shears would be a waste of money for me.
For warmer weather, far better bare legs. I have permanently tanned pins due to my outdoor activities and I don't mind flaunting them under short shorts or equivalent skirt, not very mini.

“This is just my issue, and is not to be construed as a criticism of those who choose to wear tights, but I just can't see myself ever using them... The second issue I have is the negating of the whole raison d'etre for wearing a skirt which, to me, is the free feeling around the legs, which you don't get with trousers."

Sarongman, I do understand you. So I had it until a couple of years ago myself. Now I wear them.
I don’t think you can compare the feeling of tights and that of trousers around your legs. Trousers are sliding up and down your legs as you walk. Tights surround your legs with no moving up and down, in or out. It is very different, but not bad when having got accustomed to wearing them. Even your skirt you don’t feel when in tights.

I tell more about it here: http://blog.dress2kilt.eu/#post32

To each his own but I hate the feeling of tights on my legs. I tried it once under my jogging pants (legs4men) but I found it felt very uncomfortable.
I only wear skirts when the weather is right and if it's too cold I wear jogging pants. The difference is that pants are loose from the legs letting air flow along thus insulating from the cold whereas tights give a continuous pressure to the skin. I have terribly painfull legs and knees and tights cause extra discomfort.
Besides this I would not have the guts to wear tights in public under shorts or skirt/kilt.

Depending on what's causing the pain in your legs and knees, compression tights might actually help. People wear them for things like varicose veins and fluid build-up. But if the problem is more skin-related, I could see where the constant pressure from tights could be an irritant.

Runners and cyclists commonly wear cotton and/or opaque tights in cold weather. It's not unusual.

But of course, do whatever works for you.

I find tights quite irritating to wear. I think it's the hairy legs that cause the irritation! I prefer a knee length skirt and kilt socks. I still feel warm with this combination, even in winter, however the skirts I normally wear are made by Diesel and are a padded skirt with a nylon inner and outer layer and are quite warm to wear at the best of times, thought they're still quite cool in summer.

As a teenager I was very keen on cycling (racing and touring) and I used to wear a pair of my mum's tights under my tracksuit trousers in the winter (it was her suggestion). This was very effective at keeping my legs and feet warm. A single 70 mile ride would destroy the tights though as the knees would wear out!

I wear tights, I have a couple mens pairs however most are women's and I keep different colors so I can match to what I wear. I have chronic problems with my feet and legs and they keep my legs from hurting me in the cold, however I only wear kilts, full leagth denim skirts, and gothic bondage skirts outside my home inside I wear whatever.

I wear opaque tights in the winter and sheer pantyhose in the summer. When I do wear my kilt, I wear it with whatever I had on earlier that day. Can't wear a kilt until the kiddos are all in bed and then only on occasion. I wear hose for leg support, although I don't need medical hose yet (knock on wood). I have worn thigh highs as well. If you're going to wear hose, shave first. The difference is noticeable and shaved legs feel better in hose, look better in hose. I think of hose as makeup for the legs.

"I think of hose as makeup for the legs."

Not at all keen on make-up for myself or for anyone else. I far prefer a natural look, so I shan't be wearing make-up for my legs or my face.

I don't like women's make-up, as it is usually overdone, and the result is that the faces lose their personality/individuality. I am not against plain tights, as legs are not quite as personal as the face, but I feel they are not very useful.

Very understandable Martin, but I have some discoloration in my legs due to poor circulation and with the hose it is virtually invisible. Other than hose I don't wear any makeup. I've tried at Halloween for fun, but my face breaks out. I come to conclude that I just like the fashions and want to wear anything I want to.

I started wearing for good leg health as I sit or stand for long periods at work. I wear for fashion as well. The hose has to match the outfit, compliment it, but not over power it. I have a red pair, more maroon than Christmas red and the wife doesn't like them, because I wear on Christmas with shorts. She doesn't want any colors that vivid, those are for teenage girls.

Chrsnklt,

Whilst I mainly wear black or natural I have other colours as well and, like others will wear the colour to complement the rest of the outfit. I certainly don't think that bright colours are just for teenage girls!! Jeez, the most ridiculous thing I've heard this year. I love bright colours in clothes as well as hose. Since I was given most of my stock by my wife ( she only wears popsocks now ) I also have a load of holdups and some stockings. Since I haven't been able to get away with a suspender belt the stockings are not used. I have tried using an appropriately sized elastic band at the top of each stocking but its success is rather patchy.
I believe in offering every assistance short of actual help but then mainly just want to be left to be myself in all my difference and uniqueness.

Sinned, I have tried a garter and hated it. I wear regular thigh highs with silicone bands and shave from the waist down  . The stockings stick like glue that way. Thigh highs and a kilt was an interesting experience to say the least.
I have no problem with toning down the color to keep the Mrs happy. I'd actually like to get some patterns and not just argyle.

What I also meant to say in my previous post was that it is getting increasingly difficult to get brightly coloured tights/holdups in the regular stores. In ASDA/Tesco/Matalan/Peacocks the other day and the hose were all black/natural. Is the men's "disease" now migrating to women's fashion now? Noticed this same tendency with women's trousers. Not been in M&S/BHS recently but I will be looking around.

And yes I actually prefer holdups and have no problem in keeping them up even though I don't shave my legs. But I have not come across thick holdups for winter - only sheer ones hence the use of tights at the moment.

I have not found any difficulty in FINDING the brightly (neon) colors in tights (pantyhose) the problem is GETTING them in my size !
You will not find them in the mens department for sure. You will find them in the womens or other side of the asile.

As for getting sox and some hoisery to stay up (hold ups my a$$) I use the elastic straps from my kilt flashes and fold over the top of the sox/tights/ph
just like I would do if wearing kilt sox. And of course I remove the flashes I would not want the natives to get the wrong message.
My preference is to forego the knee over/high sox holdups and wear full length tights or pantyhose then I don't have to fuss with the elastic accessories.

In closing I don't see what the problem or issue is with tights.
Either you wearem and likem or you don't and you do not wear them.
For some they can make or break a neat outfit - think tastefully done.
For hot weather discretion in wearing any kind of leg gear should be the rule.
As for winter wear - depending on the temperature and winds one could easily
wear pantyhose (UK tights) or go a tad heavier with athletic tights and if you
insist on wearing skirts in the artic/antiartic then maybe long underwear.

WHY ?
Isn't wearing a kilt enough?
Well a skirt will do in a pinch!
Make mine short and don't you dare think of pinching there !

One factor for me here is that I kinda like vented skirts, one with a vent that goes almost hip-high! I ALSO like dark colors - blacks, dark browns, Navies! The problem with this is that the very bright colors of my legs and knees clash with this theme! Dark colored tIghts solve the problem!

I like the look and feel of tights and don't find them restrictive a all.
Sinned wrote:Like StvD I often wear tights. Particularly when the weather is cold as it is now. I prefer above the knee skirts and it's just too cold to go bare legged.

STEVIE wrote:I wear tights pure and simple, as i said elsewhere. Why, simply because I enjoy them for feel and look.
All reasons I relate to..... I go bare legged in the warmer months (from October through to about April), but like the tights during our Aussie winter.
