"Upskirts" and other concerns for new skirters
The topic of "what is possibly exposed when looking at a skirt from a low angle" has recently been raised on the "Above the knee or below the knee!" thread in the Freestyle Fashions section, and I thought the issue of exposure deserved a separate thread, along with other things to consider when wearing a skirt that don't apply when wearing pants.
"Upskirt" shots are a standard subcategory of pornography, probably not so much for the images themselves but for the invasion-of-privacy aspect that is expressed or implied. News media occasionally report that a man was arrested for aiming a cell phone camera up women's skirts. This brings the possibility of "upskirting" a man, or maybe "upkilting". I doubt there is any demand for this on the porno sites, but when riding an up escalator the thought came to me that a guy could be "upskirted" as easily as a gal.
The concern of exposure in general includes thoughts about wind conditions; climbing ladders, escalators, and stairways; thinness and lightness of material, and the presence or absence of underwear. The way one sits in a chair is also important, especially in a short skirt. None of these thoughts have any relevance for a pants wearer but are new things to be aware of for a new skirter.
Another new concern is the whole thing about pockets. Some skirts have enough pocket volume to accommodate the typical collection of wallet, currency, coins, keys, pocketknife, phone, etc. that men carry, but some skirts don't. You have to think about how to carry stuff, which opens into the world of purses (or briefcase, satchel, messenger bag, etc., even a sporran). Men wearing pants can of course carry a purse (I do sometimes) but the need is greater with a skirt wardrobe.
Yet another concern is the etiquette of handling a skirt while sitting down in a chair, getting into and out of a car, and walking on a windy day. Pants wearers don't need to think about these situations.
And a final consideration is the cleanliness issue that arises when one goes commando, which happens much more in skirts than in pants, I reckon. A skirt can get accidentally soiled no matter how scrupulous you are about hygiene, and undies are easier to wash than skirts. Or does one wear a slip or half-slip, and skip the undies? Decisions, decisions.
Can any of you add to this list of things skirters have to think about, but pants wearers do not? (Other than the obvious ones of "what do people think of me?" etc.)

If the worry of someone "looking UP your skirt" worries you, don't live in a big city where there are heat vents in the sidewalks. Back in the old times when ONLY women wore skirts and never wore pants in the pre=pedalpusher days aka pre 1950's. The Police in many big cities arrested dozens of BUMS (and a few non-bums)every day standing under heat grates looking up the skirt of any woman passing overhead.
Being 71 now, I remember the 50's and 60's well and remember seeing cops dragging men out of grates in downtown Miami Florida. They were arrested for several odd charges/names that no longer exist everywhere like "Peeping Toms".
Some of you may be old enough to remember "Peeping Tom's" They still exist but are not as common as they used to be.

I'm finding it difficult to see this as much of an issue. Simple awareness and mindfulness can go a long way to prevent accidental exposure or deliberate peeps. Pay attention to your movements and to what is happening around you. Watch discretely how women handle living in skirts and learn how to be careful. If you feel comfortable about it ask a female friend for tips. This isn't rocket science, just common sense.
You don't get to judge me by your standards. I have to judge me by mine.

And don 't step over any heating grates where the bums will be trying to see your bums.

Someone on here was referring to how some people with what he called "thunder thighs" should dress or look in skirts. I hope he's not outing those kinds of opinions in the USA these days, they can get you in jail, and repeats can get you in the hospital. It may be OK in other countries to make nasty bigoted remarks about how people not related to you look or dress, but in the USA it can very easily get one jailed or hospitalized. I think it's better to just mind your own business about how others dress, eat or look if you're not related to them. I find minding my own business about how others live, dress or eat is a much better and definitely friendlier way to interact with our fellow humans.

Re: "Upskirts" and other concerns for new skirters
I have been very interested and experimenting with skirts for years. I have self trained in he art of wearing a short skirt.
It really is totally different to pants.
I confided in a woman friend who watched for me as I moved around the house, sat down & picked things up from the floor etc. her comment was I had done better than most women do in skirts
It is very much part of the responsibility of wearing skirts to conduct yourself accordingly. As soon as I am wearing a skirt I automatically change my mode of movement. When I drive in a skirt my knees are close together or touching, if I'm in pants my knees are apart. I noticed I was doing this sub consciously.
The being careful in a skirt is all part of the fun of this comfortable and liberating garment.
Unfortunately most of the time pants are the only practical thing to wear when I am at work.
Oh yes I would never go out in public without knickers / panties under my skirt

Oh yes, one other thing I have found when wearing skirts in the cold. They are wormer that you would expect. They seem to trap the heat when it's cold, but are much cooler in hot weather.

Hot air vents, none here that I know of but plenty wind and sleet and snow and rain.
It's simple, do not venture out in a howling gale in a full loose skirt, take the narrower option.
Two weeks past, I earned a rather wry smile from a lady wearing a skirt that was doing a fair parachute imitation. I wore a fairly straight cargo number with no worries whatsoever.
Steve.

I thought of another one: using a urinal next to another chap! The unstated rule at a urinal is to pay no attention to adjacent men. But recently a guy clearly looked when I lifted my skirt to pee. No words were said, I just went about my business.

That's a bit weird; what did he think he was going to see that was any different from normal?
Or maybe it was only just then that he noticed your skirt, and that is what he was looking at. I prefer that interpretation. It is the more innocent one.

Yesterday, being a Saturday and no Doctor's surgeries open, I went to the local hospital outpatients due to an ear blockage. While waiting two hours for the duty nurse to attend to me, I had to be constantly aware of my short skirt and how I was sitting. I should have worn a box pleat or a long skirt. How envious I was of the women in long skirts and dresses. BTW, nobody seemed to give me a second glance, at least in my field of awareness.

Hey, now that's a good thing that nobody took a second glance. It's good practice, two hours of being careful. It can become a bit uncomfortable after that sort of time. Doctors & hospitals are the same here in England.Sarongman wrote:Yesterday, being a Saturday and no Doctor's surgeries open, I went to the local hospital outpatients due to an ear blockage. Was it a denim short skirt ?
Re: "Upskirts" and other concerns for new skirters
No, it was a light khaki in a fine material. Both skirt and shirt came from thee same Aussie country outfitter shirt mens skirt womens, however I've seen women in the men's shirt so, what's sauce for the goose---Vince5680 wrote:Was it a denim short skirt ?
