A friend of my wife's recently posted that he ran a race in a Sportskilt. Does anyone know about them/have them/or can speak about them. Their website is good and their prices reasonable. I was going to buy one but $20 was added to the base $46 price and put the cost with shipping to over $80 which is beyond my leftover Christmas money. So I will wait a bit. But I was wondering if anyone who is familiar with them can make a comment on how they are.

I would not consider a 'SportKilt' for running in a competitive race.
Way too much (double apron) material offering wind resistance as
well as possible chafing on the legs.
Best to get something that has a minimal weight factor and that is
non-binding. I am thinking a women's beach skirt cover-up. Just
a skirt with no inner panty lining. I will leave it to you to figure out
what is needed as a supporting clause in your racing contract.
Now as for a casual race; well the SportKilt would not be so bad.
Just keep it under the 100 meter dash. You could select from the
women's Ultra or Mini Kilt or a custom men's kilt just remember to
keep it short to eliminate the double apron weight-resistance factor.

Nothing wrong with the SportKilt. I have several and the company
has come a long way from its inception of having a portable clothes
changing facility. The idea was to be able to go to a public beach in
street clothes and be able to change into beach wear sans a beach
house. Wrap yourself in a kilted bath towel of sorts and then effect
the clothing change without any undue exposure.

SportKilt has graduated big time into the kilt business.
The unique thing about their design is the velcro waist
band closing or mating of the two aprons. Therefore no belt is needed.
That is their basic model. For more money you can add the little extras
that make a kilt a real gem. I.E. belt loops; fringe edge on the outside
apron; pleats sewen down from the waist and kilt belt/buckles.
And a feature not usually found on kilts like interior (hidden) pockets.
Hem lengths custom to your request are available without charge.
The standard is about 24 inches and then on the women's style 'LOOKOUT"
for the ULTRA-mini and Mini Kilt !
They also feature a "Team Kilt" with a different tartan or solid color inlay
in the pleated area - think 'Cheerleader (skirt) Kilt' ! Mine is solid black
with their USA tartan peaking out of the box pleated pleats.
They have come a long long way from using cheap cotton to using more
advanced fabric materials that take and retain a pleat after laundering.

From time to time they offer sales with discounts of 10% and if you email
or call them better than advertised prices can be negotiated. Have some
custom ideas about kilts do the email or call them. Both you and SportKilt
maybe winners in some new design.

Orders of more than $150 get free Shipping & Handling but that might not
apply to foreign orders.

I own two Sportkilts and as soon as they come up with a Thompson Camel tartan I will buy a third one.
The light-weight fabric makes them very comfortable, especially in warm weather conditions. The pleats seem to keep forever, even after hours in an aircraft seat.
I only choose the pocket option, no belt loops.
Shipping costs some 55 euro to Western Europe which I find quite reasonable if you compare it to Utilikilts' 80 euro.

Sportkilt makes a very lightweight version called a "hiking" kilt, I own 2 of these and they are made of very lightweight fabric and are very good for hot days and/or hiking. They are also inexpensive.... I recommend them.

Thanks guys. I am still considering. I have come close to getting a Stillwater Thrifty Kilt several times, but have held back, not knowing how they would wear. The SportsKilt seemed to be better quality, though a bit more expensive. One plus I saw with SportsKilt was the greater variety in tartans. SinceI am a pastor, I thought it'd be good to get the Clergy taran - Stillwater doesn't sell that tartan.

I have also owned the Stillwater kilt, it was much heavier and the fabric didn't seem to be as strong as the SportKilt, the Stillwater seemed like it would shake apart over time....

All three of these sources have a basic bottom tier kilt.
Stillwater has a limited selection of tartans but their customer service is outstanding !!!!!
SportKilt has a greater selection of tartans and the ability to custom build a kilt on site to "Your" specs .
Frugal Corner Kilts has outstanding service also and I have a Clark Clergy Kilt. I would highly recommend it !
The colors are bright vivid blue & white. The fabric retains it sharp pleats very well and is low maintenance.
The weight is suitable for all but the most humid hot climates.
I am not in the clergy but wanted this "Blue" kilt real baddd !

I have eight Stillwater kilts:
Black Watch; Royal (Red) Stewart; Black Stewart; Irish National Tartan; Night Stalker and Solid Black (all Stillwater Standard)
Black Stewart and Irish National (Economy with simple velcro closing)

And the SportKilts:
Anderson; Black Stewart; Pacific Blue* and a Black 'Team' Kilt with USA tartan in the box pleats.

Cheap kilts are great for tossing the cabre and other active events - no dress code application !
The standard kilts are more suitable for business like formal events which beats the pant$ of the goofy dress codes.

So you can not go wrong with an entry level kilt or one for a few dollars more.

I have 3 Stillwater Kilts. All Standard weight, 3 buckle kilts. They can be quite warm in the
Texas summers. BUT they're wash-n-wear I throw them in the washing machine,
cold water, gentle cycle. When done, I hang them on several skirt hangers to 'drip-dry'
and the pleats hold

Their service is outstanding I ordered, on-line, 2 kilts on a Friday night. I had them
in the mail the following Tuesday. They (the kilts) are quite durable.

I have a Stillwater economy kilt. It is acrylic material and very easy to maintain. I dropped a lit cigarette on it and it melted a hole through the apron. My wife keeps telling me to patch it. I say it gives it character and a worn look. Warning: do not drink tequila and smoke in an acrylic kilt!
