A year ago last spring I took my black/dark gold totebag style purse on a business trip from SF to Atlanta and back. It didn't receive any comment or special attention. Now, I wasn't wearing a skirt at the time. . . .

In my experience, the security folks at airports have seen it all before; so wearing pretty much anything, while it might garner attention from other passengers, is just "same old, same old" to the security, immigration and flight personnel.
I have never had a problem wearing kilts or skirts while flying that was a consequence of the kilt or skirt. For flights I tend to use a large bum bag (fanny pack) to carry everything I need, unless I'm wearing my Utilikilt, in which case I have sufficent pocket capacity.

I purchased a woman's handbag at a thrift store ($1.75 US) several months ago. Carrying a bunch of stuff in my pockets aggravates a hip injury I have, and I started using this bag before I started wearing skirts. In fact i have been using it less since I started wearing skirts, for fear that in combination with the skirt it makes for a feminine appearance, and I don't want to look female. It is a very handy bag, and I go back and forth about using the thing again. It is (for me) a convenient size with accessible compartments so I may start carrying it again. Decisions...decisions, I can't seem to make up my mind.
Some progressions amaze me. How the "Blinkety Splat" did the site move from "man-bags" to coelacanths??? I CAN imagine a coelacanth shaped man bag but anything else relating them I am lost on. (bubbles dripping off my chin thinking of deep fried coelacanth fingers)..Their primary food is molluscans so I can assume they taste pretty good.

I have a tumi leather mans bag. on the small side just to carry my wallet (bad back from all the years of sitting on it), a cell phone (I believe it is not healthy to carry this on the hip), and reading glassed (due to age. lol). It was way too expensive but i did not want anything very large.
I carry a small shoulder bag which resembles a small messenger style bag by Sherpani. http://sherpani.com/sherpani-milli.aspx Mione is all black and I added a scifi patch on the flap to make it more appropriate for my tastes and less feminine. The maker markets as bags for women but they are very nice for everybody. they have a little symbol of a flower by their logo name but you can find ways to cover it if you desire. I can't leave home without a bag. Or as I call it my "pursue" in front of my Fiance.
I agree that some sort of purse is essential if you leave the house. I have a small dark-colored over-the-shoulder one that never gets noticed (or at least I have never had anyone comment on it).

On a serious note "Watcha gona do yo kilt-skirt-dress-even some pants don't have pockets" and you really really do need to carry all
that "stuff" - the encyclopaedia of gear/items is endless.
Well the bottomless purse (manbag) is the answer.
You could easily go light weight by carrying a small purse (clutch) or use a fanny (bum) bag to keep your hands free.
Nothing wrong with improvising - the one size fits all is not the answer for everyone.

With warmer weather, the need for some kind of bag is becoming apparant. When I wear a coat or jacket I have plenty of pockets to carry all my junk. But now I need something to hold a wallet, keys, cell phone, cigarettes, lighter, sunglasses, and loose change. Then again, a bag would be one more thing to carry.
I always wear a satchel bag. I also find that it helps take much of the attention off the skirts and just adds to the whole contempary look, not to mention it is far better than carrying crap in my pockets which is hate.
A side note, I hate the term "man bag" women have taken everything of mens clothing then now when things come back into fashion for men (even after just a few years) they try label it as "man .........." Satchel bags, sandals, skirts, leggins, stockings, heels.....etc are all mens clothing at one time or another and it gets me that ignorant fashion comentators attempt to "re-write" history and to say that these things are new to mens fashion and taken from womens clothing. Ok enough ranting, feel better now.

Nothing either from airport security staff who gave me the "pat-downs" (I have a pacemaker so am not allowed to go through the metal detector.) except a cheery smile and chat once I had been frisked several times by the same fellow

I was looking at buying a new leather tote bag but they were about $20 new so my friend Sue said, "let's go to a thrift store and we can buy you a nice masculine purse for a dollar or so." So this is what I bought (I think it was $1.25):
A friend of mine said it's a ladies' backpack so I imagine that's what it is. If any moderator wants to delete this post because of poor picture quality, it won't hurt my feelings...at all.

Not to mention murse, guyliner, and manscara instead of the original terms of purse, eyeliner, and mascara - part of the incredibly stupid "masculine anxiety" paranoia pandemic to our society.
