how short is short?

Post by couyalair »

It has been mentioned several times here that knee-length skirts (of suitably dull colour, of course!) go un-noticed, as they are taken for shorts or bermudas.
But what will happen when the present long shorts go out of fashion, and men take to wearing real shorts again? Will skirt-wearers have to adopt mini-skirts in order not to look unfashionable (or so that their skirts will still be taken for shorts)?

It seems to me that, at last, we are seeing more and more real shorts (or running shorts) on the streets -- at least, in my part of the world. Is it the new trend? Are men getting tired of having lots of cloth around their knees?
Will I have to raise the hem-line on all my skirts and kilts?

Martin ;-)

I reckon there will be enough men who want good coverage so long shorts will remain fairly common even if they cease to be fasionable. So the same will go for men's skirts - short may become the least noticeable but knee length will still be fairly unobtrusive.

Just a guess though!
Keep on skirting,

If strangers ask questions about what happens when you bend over or sit down, your skirt is probably too short, I'd posit. Otherwise, it's probably OK. :faint: :faint: :faint: :faint:

Martin, if your skirt is not to be recognized as a skirt but be taken for shorts, yes you should adjust the hemline accordingly, I think.

PS. I also think, men's shorts have been somewhat shorter this year.

Great example Greg, looks great.

I don't know about any where else but here in Australia guys wear shorts around the knee length. I find that If I wear a skirt at the same length as what I would shorts then I am not going to standout. Also here in Australia, girls wear shorts and skirts at a really short length so if I wear a skirt to short it is going to have a more feminine look to it regardless, but if I wear a skirt at the same length as guys wear their shorts them my skirt doesn't look feminine rather it looks more masculine. In say this though, men do wear short length running shorts so if I am running I can get away with a short skirt without raising an eyebrow. Its a funny thing :alien:

The pictures are from 2002. At that time men's shorts were often that short. And wearing a skirt the same length made it "invisible".

Actually, the first time it took my wife over half an hour to recognise that I was in a skirt. I had been going out shopping wearing the shorts and had come back in the skirt.
